Texas and New Jersey Avlis gatherings are a success!!

Post by Orleron » Tue Oct 07, 2003 4:09 am

The Texas and New Jersey Avlis gatherings have gone off without a hitch, and fun was had by all! There are some pics from both gatherings that will be posted in short order. I believe the Texas ones are already up. It was cool to meet the new people who showed up in NJ. We had about 15 or 20 people show up for this gathering, and maybe 10 or 15 show up in Texas. A couple of the Connecticut people even asked me to join my pnp group permanently, which of course is very cool, since we only play maybe once a month or every 2 months.

I will be writing up the synopsis of the pnp notes in the Info forum, with some help from good ol' Myk D'vor. So be on the lookout for that.

These Avlis gatherings that have been popping up around the United States and Europe have inspired Silk and I to eventually do some sort of Avlis conference. We don't know when, or where yet. But we will try to put it in an accessible place, at least for the North Americans. We will also give about a year's notice in case the Euro's or Asian/Aussies would like to come too.

It's also possible that next year around May, I might head down to Oz to run a gathering. (Party at Vicky's house. Woo!)

Taking a step back, I am truly amazed at this community. We have a large group of players who all see each other online on a regular basis, and it's getting to the point where a lot of us are even meeting up becoming friends in real life. The world itself is going beyond NWN, and becoming a larger entity/organization in its own right. I am grateful that everyone has found something they like to do, because I know I also like doing this. It will be interesting to see how we grow and where this all heads to in the future as things get bigger.

A final word about pnp.... There should be enough information on the boards and the Info forum for home-grown DM's to run Avlis campaigns on their own at home with pnp. I want to say that you are welcome to do this, again, the world is for all of you to play in. Please give proper citation and credit for any written materials that you use, but other than that, use them in good health. Make your own Avlis campaign with your friends and shape your campaign through it.

Thanks all. See you at the next gathering.

So, my question is, at what point will Blackdagger decide to take advantage of the Open License and maybe decide to publish a campaign setting/sourcebook for PnP? :D

When we have an extra US$12,000 to spare to put out the book. We plan to do it, but not until some of our other non-NWN related business ventures pan out. Could be a year. Could be ten. Not sure.

an Investor expects a return on their investment... This is more like a grant since we don't expect to make money from this.

Yeah. From what we learned at GenCon, if we ever make a book, we will lose BIG money. If we do this, it's not for the money, it's for the dream.

You could always do it like an e-book or something. PDF format, custom artwork, that sort of thing. If you really wanted to distribute it (conferences, etc), CDs are a lot cheaper than publishing books.

Either way, I'd buy it! :)

If I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna go all the way! :)

Minimum printing of these things is usually 2000 copies.... so I guess with your copy that means we only have 1999 more to sell, WooT!!

bah... pirate shmirate.... even if we sold every last book, we'd only make about US$1.30 per piece, and that's not counting the labor we put into it, or the long distance phone calls, or the pressing of Jordicus into service.

1992. I'll get my own copy!

The only online community I have ever known with the sort of spirit shown here is the Off Topic crew at the official Championship Manager website. I've made a real-life friend from there as we are both returnees from Japan.

It really is great that something that is so villified as the internet can actually create real-life friendships as well as the huge number of valuable online friendships we see here and at the CM website. In an age when all we seem to hear about is the latest use of the internet as some paedophile child-grooming tool it is heart-warming to know that such a wonderful tool can be put to a good use too.

1991 & 1990 - I'd have to buy 2 copies just so a friend of mine doesn't constantly "borrow" mine all the time like he does most of my books now!
