Burnham Events presents: The Great Race

Post by Dirk Cutlass » Tue Sep 30, 2003 10:14 am

A friend an I were talking about trade routes the other day, and in particular what would be the fastest route to port goods between all the great City's of Southern Avlis (Mikona, Elysia, Le'Or and Deglos Gate).

Anyway, to cut a long story short (and to settle a small wager with my friend), we agreed to set a challenge, to find the fastest time that this could be accomplished in. The challenge is this...

A race will be held, open to all comers

The race will be held in a few days time. (ooc: Saturday 4th Oct, 9:30pm BST [British Summer Time, which is currently GMT+1])

The race will start just outside the City Gates of Mikona. Contestants will then race (by whatever route, and by whatever means that they see fit) to each of 3 staging posts, and then back to the City Gates of Mikona (the "finish line").

The 3 staging posts will be:
1. The border-post just outside Elysia
2. The Entrance Gate to Deglos
3. Underneath the City of Le'Or

Contestants can do these staging posts in any order. Marshalls will be posted at each staging post, to give the contestants a special "token" as proof that they have been to the post. The first person to cross the finish line with all 3 tokens will be declared the winner. There are no rules other than that!

I am offering a prize of 20,000 gold to the winner of this race.

In addition I will also be holding a sweepstake on the fastest time for completing this race (ooc: use real-time). Each "bet" costs 1000 gold. Nearest bid time gets the lot!

(To place your bet, please see me around town in person, or post me a note with a guarantee for payment of your stake).

This should be a lot of fun, spectators welcome. If you want to spectate, then I would suggest picking a suitable cross-roads where you are likely to see the race, or one of the staging posts would be good too.

PS: I will also need to employ some marshalls (6 I think - 2 at each staging post). I will pay 500 gold to each marshall for this task. Please sign up below. I will provide brightly coloured uniforms for the event.

PPS: Any reporters from that "Mikona Daily" news-scroll are welcome to provide press coverage if they want.

(ooc: The staging posts are all in the Wilderness to avoid having to do lots of server transitions, and other problems that might occur. However, if someone wants to take the boat to/from Elysia then they can try if they want. ;) )

(ooc: PS: DM's are welcome to er... add a little excitement on-route if they want ;) )

I will gladly provide any press coverage.

If people plan on partaking this great event, please contact me, as I would like to do a series of interviews before, during and after this event.

Of course I won't publish those interviews prior to the race, but only after it, so you won't have to fear that you give out your favourite secret route to the other contestors.

Illustrissimo,

Oh, and one point of clarification. I am not banning the use of spells like invisibility for this event, but please bear in mind that if my marshalls can't see you, they can't give you your "token".

(ooc: regarding server-crashes. Nothing I can do about that really, if the server crashes, it will effect everyone the same - they will just have to start where the server last saved their position. It might mess up the sweepstake though - I might take that into account and subtract the "downtime" from the end figure to compensate.)

Dear Mr Burnham,

I would like to apply for the post of Marshall for this event please.

You may recall that I took part in your recent Bard Festival?

If possible, I would prefer to work at the Mikona Checkpoint, as this is likely to be the most active and interesting. However, I could be persuaded to work at one of the others if required.

Regards,
Kalinda Swift - Bard.

Bah... monks and mages, no body else has the same speed. I don't even need to apply, as I cannot match them in pure landspeed.

Or get a non-competing mage to buff you up. There are absolutely no restrictions on what you can do.

Besides, there's just as much fun to be had as a spectator. There's the sweepstake, and no doubt someone might even run a book on who will win!

OOC: (this isn't an IC forum)

1- Hasted mages will win... it's not even a contest... disallow haste and Monks... (And my main char is a monk, so that would disqualify her too, so I'm not being biased)

2- Wish I could come, but the NE Avlis meet is on the 4th. :(
<Sili> I've seen septic tanks with less shit in them than Fuzz.

<Ronnin> damm not even a kiss??
<Chasmania> Kiss Fuzz? I'd rather fellate a goat.

<Chasmania> there are many roads to Rome..they just picked a shit filled alley full of scabby hookers and bums.

ooc: It was in an IC forum - someone moved it from Mikona Tavern to the News section for some reason ???? Could whoever did it explain their reasons, or if it was an accident move it back please.

ooc: I agree about the hasted mages thing, and thought long and hard about it. But what could I do - ban all mages ? Make them carry a box of iron ore to slow them down ? I seriously considered these, but couldn't think of an IC reason for it - Bill's wager was to find the fastest time to do the route - giving folks a fair chance doesn't really come into it. In the end if it is a race between mages then so be it. In that case consider it more like a horse race - which mage will you bet on ;)

A very short halfling attaches a note written by the scribe:

I, Shorts, would like to be a Marshall. Can provide many references to my responsibility upon request.

For next time, make all contestants wear a jacket that has a constant dispell effect on it... if you change your clothes, you get disqualified. (Ask a DM to watch)

ooc. Dont forget mages need to rest to cover all the distance hasted, while other classes do not. I say everyone has a chance in this race. Especially non spell-casters. It will be a lot of fun...

OK folks, so far we have:

Press coverage: Janur da Medican
Marshalls: Kalinda Swift, Shorts, any more ??
Contestants: many & varied at seems ;)

3 marshalls mininimum will do, i.e. 1 per checkpoint.. I would prefer 2 per checkpoint so that it isn't so reliable on 1 person (ooc: e.g. if they have to go "afk" for a bit). So more volunteers would be good. Don't forget you get 500 gold for your time, and get to be a part of this fine event.

Once the marshalls are confirmed, I will meet up with them and give them there special "tokens". I would prefer to meet up in Mikona, but will take the boat-ride to Elysia if necessary. The wilderness is too dangerous for me without an bodyguard, so I can't meet anyone there.

It looks like it will be a fun time, and don't forget about the sweepstake for anyone that likes a little gamble!

Great! We have at least 4 marshalls:

Marshalls: Kalinda Swift, Shorts, Vence Black & Aspirant Silus

Checkpoints are:
A. Entrance to Elyisa (ooc: on the Wilderness server still, just by where the transition to Elysia server is)
B. Entrance to Delgos (ooc: on the Wilderness server still, in front of those gates near where the stall-holders are).
C. Entrance to Le'Or (ooc: on the Wilderness still, just near the Southern-most transition point to Le'Or).

Any preferences for which checkpoints you want?

Please find me in Mikona at the earliest opportunity to receive you 500 gold payment and uniforms. Or send me a message and I can meet you somewhere. You will only receive the special "tokens" on the day.

(ooc: actually I will give you the tokens when I see you, if we leave it to late we might not have time for you to get in place before the race starts).
