Funny toolset happenings!

Post by Kandi_Nulein » Wed Jun 03, 2009 3:54 pm

Or...

Get WTFPWNed in your own dungeon playroom by two Demi-Liches you didn't even know were there, or intended to be there...

HOW?

Yeah it took me one run through to work it out too, but it was piss funny to wander around your own player housing only to find it had been inhabited by two floating skulls fresh out of a strip from OotS!!

Soo, what was it? Turns out that if you don't check the scripting on that previously thought of 'pile of bones' that you place in your secret 'this is my getaway tunnel'TM then you get the liches taking up residence.

I can totally understand too, cos I have a really plush cottage decced out in all the fancy...well you get the idea.

Funniest unintentional thing I ever saw..."WFT where did those liches come fr..." *pile of dust*

Ah yes. There are some wonderful placeables that spawn skeletons, zombies, liches or whatever else when a PC gets close enough.
Plenty of more surprises to be found.

I so would love something like that happening to me if I ever get my own place. Not something too powerful though, I want a surprise, not to get permanently screwed...

What about a nearly-invincible combat dummy that chases after you?

Yeah, this is why you load up your player housing module at home and walk through it a lot before you submit it.

I found the gargoyle spawning rocks in my temple design that way :)

Hehehe!! Either that or the placeable plant/bloodstain/carpet/whatever is something like 10' off the ground! Besides, it's fun to walk through your own creations.

I've checked houses where a placeable has moved unexpectedly and have had to write the player to ask "is this what you wanted?"

Also, uhm, make sure your doorway is facing the same direction as the doorway of the house on the exterior? Especially if you have two or three floors, make sure they are all facing the right way and that the stairs match up. :|

You have to map the exterior too? Wasn't aware of that...

That all depends on what you are asking for with your submission. If you have chosen an existing house, then make sure your door faces the same way the exterior house does.

For example, I once worked on a submission where the inside of the house had a door on the south and a door on the west. But the exterior house they wanted the submission to be linked to had a door to the south and a door to the north. Essentially, your character would exit a house facing west, and would appear outside facing north. That sort of thing is usually pretty disorienting* and its a lack of continuity that sets my teeth on edge.

Hey! I resemble that remark!

Don't resent it at all? :)

Why should you resent it? Its true. How else do you explain leaving the Northern Residential District to the north and end up facing east at Elf Gate? Now I know that Elysia is supposed to be shaped like a circle, and that can be a touch difficult to manage in a toolset that doesn't allow for diagonal lines, so I understand a bit of suspension of disbelief ICLY, but to the player it still can be very disorienting. I used to know a player or two who avoided Elysia specifically because of this.

In another example, the Nobles District, the Parks District, and the Outer Champions Keep are essentially supposed to be a square within a square within a square. But for years the Parks District was turned 90% counterclockwise. If you entered the area from the south of the Nobles district, you appeared in the Parks area in the east. This was finally fixed when the Jechrani refugee camp was put in.

Ye gods, this had bothered me. Glad it finally was fixed.

I also hate Elysia!
Always consider alignment as a tool, not a straitjacket that restricts the character.

I was referring to the fact the phrase is usually 'I resent that remark', not resemble.
