ESL Players!

Post by Deider » Mon Dec 14, 2020 11:22 pm

A random shout-out to everybody here for whom English is not their native language. I only know one other language aside from English and even though I speak it fairly well I can't imagine trying to roleplay in it. So hats off to you!! :liebe:

I'll add a minute of silence for the ESL players who took more than a minute to figure out what ESL stands for. (I sure did.)

Whoops! ESL stands for "English as a Second Language." When I was a kid that was what the classes were called for children in our school who were learning English as a non-native tongue. It may be an antiquated term here; when my son moved to California from Japan a few years ago they called it something else (maybe because technically it might not be the second language the student is learning).

lol..that is why I don't like writing long reports/pms. It takes me ages to formulate just one

When I get nervous it's even worse. I misunderstand things in the game so easily, which makes me ask people in tells what it means - unless Pallizard is there. He understand it better than I. That's why it suits me perfect to let other characters than mine taking the leading role..lol.

Thanks for everyone's patience and understanding <[8)

I can relate, I learned most of my English on Avlis too. :D (English is my first, and only language lol)

I spit out a ton of our IC languages (which ironically, I also know better than any other real languages despite studying a little bit of Russian and Spanish). How well do you ESL people follow along with those languages like dwarven, nanshilae, or drangonari?

When people try to sound like dwarf.. it's difficult to understand and i have to read it out loud for it to ''sound'' like something.. the worse thing is when a dwarf character write like he speak (on a forum post).. i hate it. I mean, most people write properly even if they have a terrible accent. Dwarf are just a special kind of stupid i suppose.

Dragonari.. i long ago quit to try understand what they mean and nanshilae, i just bother about the few basic: hello, goodbye, thanks and so on.

Then you must reconcile yourself to the fact that something is always hurt by any change. If you do this, you will not be hurt yourself.

The best thing is to make sure your character doesn't know those languages IC lol

Yes indeed, I have always had respect for all the non-English speaking players on Avlis through the years. So hats off to you all!
