Charity Auction of a Longsword, Boots (and now a Ring too)

Charity Auction of a Longsword, Boots (and now a Ring too)
As I alluded to on the regular tavern boards, I acquired some valuable items from the corpse of one of the Malekite Reavers who attacked the city. I am planning to auction some of these items as a way of raising money for the widows and orphans of the soldiers who died in the attack and to help fund the rebuilding of some of the homes that were destroyed in the Reavers' arson attacks outside the city walls.
There are several items, but I wish to make you especially aware of the two finest items, which are a longsword with two runes of enchantment and a pair of lesser gargoyle boots.
I shall be conducting the auction in an appropriate place, to be confirmed, but likely to be the gladiator arena, if I can obtain permission. The auction will take place sometime on Tuesday 2nd August, by Gnomish reckoning. I shall decide an actual time based upon any requests made below and confirm said time by 17:00 Gnomish Machnie Time on Tuesday.
The auction will be live, but in order to make it fair on those who cannot attend I am going to add a twist. If you cannot attend the auction itself, you may send me a private letter detailing what bid you are prepared to make. Once the auction itself has ended I shall compare the amounts in the actual auction and the amounts sent by letter and whichever is greater will be the winner. If one of the letters is the winner, no more bids will be accepted at the live auction, so keep that in mind if you bid at the live auction folks!
I request that a city official be present so that I can immediately hand over all takings to someone responsible and to confirm the auction is conducted fairly.
In addition to the sword and boots, I will be auctioning a helm, a belt, a few potions and a few fine suits, one of which has a minor protective enchantment. Assuming I can locate what became of the items taken by Piwi from the other corpse I investigated I shall auction them also, though there was nothing truly remarkable. Also, if whoever took the items found on the corpse of the High Reaver comes forward, I shall auction those items too, if it is worthwhile.
Finally, there are one or two items that I found on the corpse that cannot be used by anyone who does not have an evil heart. Rather than sell these and allow them to be used for further dark deeds, I will be speaking to the city, and, following my heart, the Church of Gorethar, about these items and what is to become of them. In the past I had a weapon of evil reforged to be useable by myself (the morningstar some of you have seen my wield). If possible I will pay myself to have these items reforged and either use them myself in the fight against evil, or give them to someone they suit better. If no reforging is possible I shall see them destroyed. ((Darksteel Tower Shield, Old Duellists Belt, Arrows of No Escape))

p.s. I once conducted a similar auction in Ferrell and was able to raise over 200,000 gold pieces for the Healers of Cha'reth. I doubt we will match that here, but hopefully we can achieve some good.

I am pleased to inform you all that I have, whilst sorting through the belongings of the Reaver whose belongings I recovered, also discovered a Ring of Invisibility and a Rod of Resurrection!
I shall be auctioning these along with the sword and boots.
I shall find some way of auctioning the items above too, possibly as a job lot, or set of job lots.

*a dirty soot-covered priest in a slightly singed set of Toran's robes reads the notices. As he reaches the last one he pens a short response, getting dirt and grime all over the board in the process*
Sir Toille,
It might be a better use of the Rod to resurrect those that lost their lives in defense of this city, rather than dispense a few more gold to the coffers. I am sure that the people that are raised will appreciate it, as will the families and friends. The guard stands depleted, and 20 more men would help out.

*Shiro reads the boards, lifts helm, then spits on ground, shaking his head at what he just read, walks away thinking about all the dead and brave /couragous/ honorable people who fought so hard on that day and lost all* "Auction?......bah" *Shiro then pens a letter for a few of his local chums to get together for an outing*
Ya live once, if ya do it right, once is enough!
*written in an angry script*
bloody hell I will not pay another coin for that which was rightfully earned I lost a lot that day of my own and replacing it was costly (so costly i doubt I could join the auction anyway) but I would do it again for the safty of my home but this is just insulting making people pay twice for loot of the fallen enimes.. loot gathered that day should be be offered to those that fought for the city's safty they may not have paid with their lives but everyone paid that day. what remains should be sold off for the fallen.

Those who lost all? Such as the families of the dead soldiers? I think perhaps they are the ones who lost most - their husbands and fathers. Have you no compassion? Have you no sense of duty to care for the families of those who will not return to us? As for who was bravest, most courageous and honourable, I again say that was the soldiers. They did their duty knowing there was little chance the gods would smile upon them and return them to their loved ones.

Unsigned worm,
Your words expose your heartless greed and your failure to sign your name exposes your cowardice. I hope you were less cowardly upon the battlefield or the only thing you deserve is scorn and contempt.
Without the Imperial Soldiers that fought and died by your side you would not stand among us still today and it is those soldiers families who I would thank for that. Those men fought and died for their homes, knowing they were not touched by the gods and that their death would be final. It is they who are brave, they who "rightfully earned" the compassion of the survivors for their families.
You are a mercenary, and a pathetic one at that, for you seek to gain advantage where no terms were set. I am not making anyone pay anything for that which I gathered. Yes, after all, it was me who recovered these things, which gives me every right to keep them for myself, were I as pitiable a wretch as you.
Perhaps if you stated what you lost and how you lost it in defense for the city somemight be prepared to help you. I for one, am in a better position than most to do so. As it is your anonymous bleeting and whining will avail you nothing and your chance is lost, you contemptuous creature.
You serve the Malekites well with your malcontent.

Boris stops by the market place several times and reads the notice. Each time he become more irritated. He wonders how a person can be in a city for such a short period of time and wield so much power? He reads it one last time before heading off to the goblin caves. He is so distracted, he leaves before suppressing any battlemages. He heads over to the Star of the Empire and not even the bartender in the backroom can calm Boris down.
*once again, people must have been muttering their thoughts to themselves, as Laen hears of Boris's opinion*
How can you suggest that holding a charity auction is in any way "wielding power"? I found some items left on a battlefield and I am auctioning them for charity. I don't see how I can be accused of wielding power for auctioning something for charity that I could have just kept quiet about and kept for myself.

*a note, written in a fine elven script*
Greetings to all who shall read this humble passage,
It is with great interest I read these inked thoughts. Many provoking within myself a reflection upon mine own concepts of sacrifice & reward. What follows is an attempt to refine the dialogue between all factions of this discussion.
Point the first:
The concept of using the spoils of war to make the passing of those gone to the 'otherside' easier upon their surviving families, is a noble concept indeed. A concept long rooted in the history of the world. In all fairness, I must however ask...Does not this fine city, the crown jewel of the Kurathane Empire, not provide adequately for its fallen Hero's families? Having newly arrived myself, I have no idea of its civic history, but will embark at once to investigate this question. Until this question is answered, I reserve mine personal judgement of the practicality & fairness of this concept.
Point the second:
It is a practice, in mine own experience thruout the lands of Avlis, that the spoils of war are shared amongst the unpaid citizenry who step forward to defend these lands. Who at their own personal expense, bolster the defenses in time of need. Now should this practice be changed, to one of whomever recovers the spoils dictates its disposition, are we not opening up a path to defeat & conflict? For if this is to be the way of the future, what will come of our future battles, when the recovery of the spoils precedes the defeat of the common foe? I ask this question in all seriousness, for a precedent, nay an unfortunate precedent, may be put in place with the acceptance of this policy.
It is my humble request of all who read this, look within, and ask these questions of yourself. For surely as Dru'el created my kin, the answer lies within our hearts, to resolve this in such a manner as to leave all with a sense of fairness and accomplishment.
At your service,
Kangi Tanka

To the Malcontents and those that care little for the safety of Kuras,
I will have you know that while you were spewing your filth and vitriol on these boards, and planning your little escapades, others have been working to fix the damage done to the city. Some have joined the Watch. Some have helped the sick and dying. Some have even manage to raise a few coin for those in need. Just because you cannot see the merit behind their actions do not discredit them. I fully support this auction, and will even participate if I can. I encourage all to do what they can to see this city returned to normal. Again, sorry for posting on this topic, but Laen Toille deserves respect as one that has stood on the walls and defended this city with his life.

I have identified a compromise solution to quell the anger of all those who resent helping their fellow people of Kuras.
I propose a raffle. I have, through close liason with the Imperial Soldiers who fought and survived the battle, identified all those adventurers who fought in the conflict. Each of these people shall have one ticket in this raffle.
Tickets will also be available to purchase. Those who fought in the conflict will be able to purchase tickets for 750 gold. Those who did not take part in the conflict will be able to purchase them for 1500 gold. I myself will refrain from holding tickets.
This raffle will take place if and only if two conditions are met;
1. That those who have criticised my plan to auction the items, either through what they have written anonymously in taverns, or mutterings under their breath that were reported back, agree here to this plan. I will listen to suggestions for altering it, but will not be held to any conditions imposed by others for their approval.
2. That I am able to sell at least 60 tickets in total (750 gold or 1500 gold type) for the raffle. Though greatly reduced I shall in this way still be able to raise money for the widowns and orphans whose loved ones died in the attack and help rebuild homes. Those wishing to buy tickets may write their name below. If I ever learn of any who fought in the battle buying tickets at reduced rates for those who did not, I shall see to it that they regret doing so. Legally, of course.
The first name drawn will be able to choose their lot from the list below, followed by the second name drawn, etc etc.. This shall be done under observation of an appropriate city official.
I still refuse to offer the items that can only be used by those with an evil heart.
If the person who took the items from the body of the High Reaver comes forward I am happy to do the same for these items too.
I await consent for this plan from those mentioned above, and requests to purchase tickets from all.
Laen Toille.

2.Ring of Invisibility

5.Greater Magic Bag
6.Ring of Protection +2
7. Bracers of Armour +2

To me this sounds foolishness and rubble of greedyness comming in when the city needs it helps. Not only I believe that those items should go to help the city, but there doesn't even need to have an auction in order for the city to recieve any help, monetary or other kind of help. I willingly gave my share and shall give more.
However, I can only speak for myself, and shall allow you to do as you wish, as long as the city will benefit some in the end.
In addition, mister Toille, if, by any means you still wish to try and hold an auction, I would gladly donate you a few personal items of mine to auction off for the benefit of the city and the Church of Toran.

~ A solider of the Imperial Order marches up to the town board and hammers a note. He shakes his head and marches off. The note reads...
Citizens of Kuras.
Due to the loss of our forces during the conflict, we were ill prepared to regulate this situation. As such, rather than proper protocol being followed, we felt the populace was capable of handling the situation on their own. However, it seems without guidance, you only fell into the shameful pit of chaos and pettiness that is so against the lawful and righteous ways of our great lord Toran, and the very principles this City, Nation, and grand Empire was founded on.
Becuase of your complete lack of ability to negotiate such simplicities, in the future the City of Kuras will confiscate ALL items, armour, bags, and any other goods held by the deceased in question.
Should we decide that citizenry could do better with the trinkets than the city itself, we may distribute these items as we decide. These matters will be conducted by the Legion Command. Otherwise, the city will transfer the items for use within the Legion, or to pay for damages caused by the attacker.
Know this. It is your civic duty as citizens of the Kurathene to serve our Empire at ALL TIMES. You do NOT serve for the gain of wealth, or prestige. You are Kurathene. You are above the disarray of the Malekite hordes, and beyond the simplicities of lesser men. Act accordingly.
To the citizens whom conducted themselves appropriatly, the City of Kuras thanks you for your dedication to your city.

It seems to me there is little foolishness in the suggestion by Master Toille to auction or raffle these items. Such events foster civic pride, raise addition gold for the city (it is my understanding that all gold raised will be donated, and that Master Toille is being selfless in this matter), and redistribute the spoils that were seized from those masters of Chaos, the Malekites. Such redistribution will increase the readiness of the citizenry to support the Imperial army in future, should the need arise.

The need for strict order keeping by the hand that wields the power is clear.
Mister Toille, i wish to buy tickets for the raffle. If due to timing i will not be able to attend personally, i will send you an ordering of preference.
Discipline and focus prevail.

Greetings once again to all,
I have completed my research regarding the care and maintenance of the families of the Kurassian Heroes who have recently fallen. I have it from a most reputable source, that there is no allowance in this city for the maintenance of said families. Nay, it is considered an honor & duty to have fallen in her defense. And while some of the families will accept such aid, there are many who will not accept it, considering instead, the honor bestowed by their Hero, compensation enough.
In light of my findings, I forthwith support the Honorable Master Toille's program. I am however, of not sufficient means to participate in said lottery, and hereby relenquish any claim to compensation for my defense of the city. I will also contribute half of the occupants of my coin purse (1000g) to Master Toille's endeavour.
To those who would slander me for raising this question in the first place, know that were I not to care for the citizens of this city, I would not have placed my fate at your side defending her. I did not seek out assurances of my financial restitution prior to standing upon the ramparts. Nay it was only afterwards, upon hearing of the bounty recovered, that I thought to seek aid, that I might stand at the ready, amply supplied to defend her properly. For you see, there are those of us of meager means, where a few quivers of arrows, or a few potions, would be a great help.

PEACE PLEASE!
Master Toille,
By my eyes, unless you receive instructions from the authories to the contrary, the items you hold are yours by right of conquest, to dispose of as you see fit. Your desire to disperse these items in a manner which raises gold for reparations to be made following the recent attacks, and to strengthen the citizens most willing and able to support the Imperial army, can only be regarded as selfless and loyal to the city of Kuras.
I urge you to persist in this endeavour, unless or until instructed not to do so by one of appropriate authoruity. If you do persist, I would desire to purchase a ticket for this raffle, and willingly provide the necessary sums for Master Tanka to likewise participate.

Ok, a compromise solution in the northern tradition. *words crossed out*Fifty wrote:As no-one responded to my offer of a compromise solution I will be auctioning the items I found and will be happy to auction these items also.
I will collect them from you when possible.

On Sunday, 1600GMT, we who fought in defense of the city gather and be time honored high roll of the dice, we choose a selection order to divide the spoils. Each person chooses an item, until no item remain that people want, and the rest is sold off.
My preferred place to have talked about the compromise solution would have been, in person, by the Temple of Toran, after the battle, and then all parties could have had a voice in the decision.
Respectfully,
