NW Max with 3ds max 7.0 - can it be done?

Post by Abdenago » Tue Jan 17, 2006 8:38 pm

I've got a copy of 3dsmax 7.0 but all I read about NW Max is that it was compatible with 3ds 5.0 and below. Any help or suggestions guys?

I've tried running NWMax with my version and it does turn from grey to green like it's working but I can't load any of the NWN modules up. I've read a tutorial but the option to select NWN placeables doesn't exist.

Do I just copy the scripts and the UI folders over?

As you install it, and it asks for destination folder
default is max 6 change to max 7 and install, everything will go where it needs to be

I've been messing around with it, haven't figured out how to load up any items. I'd like to start off just modifying the design on shields and then move on from there. I'm so lost right now, I guess I'll have to read a lot of tutorials and help pages. Any help would be appreciated :D

Ok, I downloaded NWN Explorer and figured out how to export the models for some things. But I can't figure out how to modify the skin on the shield.

Here's what I got so far.

It doesn't even show the skin for the shield here. This stuff is overwhelming to say the least but I'm going to try and stick with it.

You have to extract the skin (.TGA) the shield uses, and it must be in the same folder as the shield model for it show in the max window.

I got the shield to display with a custom design, I think it looks very good for my first attempt. I made a congruent shield design and sliced it into a quarter section, just like the original .mdl's are. The only problem is I can't export it. 3dsmax can't export .mdl's and I found an option in the nwmax window that says export all or selected but if flashes something quickly and doesn't export it.

Edit: I had changed the directory and that must have messed something up. Exited the program and reopened it and I'm able to export sucessfully :)

Edit2: I guess now all I have to do is make some shield designs (as tga files). And I guess technically I didn't have to mess with the mdls though I'm sure now that I know a little something I can contribute to Avlis more.

Edit 3: Having some fun making shield designs. The only problem I've ran across is that I don't know how to make just a 1 section design. I've got the 4 congruent, mirrored design...

This is the one that splits into 4 that I wish would cover the whole shield as 1 emblem...

Here's some sucessfull 4 quad designs:
