Radeon 9600 256mb need help

Post by ThyRiveter » Thu Sep 01, 2005 1:24 am

OK,

I went to biowares website and read on there about all sorts of problems with the 9600. Now even the newest catylist drivers that came out on the 29th of this month help any and I saw no posts where it said anything about taking care of the problem or anything helping it out any. I get about 50 FPS normally IG and it drops to 24fps and lower when loading up the NPCs and PCs. Does anyone have any tips or tweaks that help make NWN run smoother with this card? It's not much of a problem till 1-12 NPCs or PCs try to load on my screen. Then it's lag city for about 5-20 sec then everything is fine.

Xtasy Radeon 9600 256MB 8xAGP running @ VPU: 326 DDR:399

NWN + Radeon doesn't always mix. Some people on here will claim they've had no trouble with their ATI-based cards, and others (such as myself) will claim that the performance just stinks.

My old 9800pro... not so hot on NWN. My new 6800GT... very hot on NWN. The really noticeable difference... not so much.

When it comes down to it though, this isn't a First Person Shooter that requires you to pull >30fps at all times. Granted, if you're into keeping up with the tech. for the latest games, your 9600 is about to become outdated: see system requirements for F.E.A.R.

I have a 9600Pro 128MB. The drivers tend to be pretty lousy with NWN. When I was playing HotU Chapter 2, some bug with the ATI OpenGL drivers caused it to pop up a "this program has performed an illegal operation" sort of thing and close. Working around that was a pain. Then, when I updated to Catalyst 5.7, my system would sometimes totally lock up seconds after starting NWN. I rolled back to 5.6, and I'm still having no problems. As far as performance, I don't know, since I can usually only get 30 FPS tops (all max settings), and I experience that same loading lag. It just doesn't bother me much. You may want to try some other stuff, though... defrag, optimize your virtual memory, set a good AGP Aperture size in BIOS (128 MB is usually what I see recommended), etc. Good luck.

I have a 9600 PRO, and have virtually no problems. Once in a rare while NWN crashes, but usually seems Windows related. I've updated drivers every new release for over a year and a half, and seen no changes at all. Did your box say if ATI included the special Gremlin chip with yours? Seems to be the only real explanation for such hit and miss problems.

I dont know. I bought it from a friend of mine. I was running a GeForce4 TI 4200 128mb 400MHZ DDR 8x AGP but thought I'd try this out. I only got the ATI card for $50.. so i figured hey, why not.

Have any of you tried the Radeon Omega drivers? I'm thinking about installing them and trying that out and see how it works.

he didnt have a box. But he said he bought it brand new a few months ago.

I moved my network and sound cards to the last 2 slots on my motherboard.. for some reason my sound and video are sharing the same IRQ.. wich I read that can cause problems with video.. also was reading that Radeon cards dont like VIA chipsets very well. So.. I'm going to screw with it some more and if I cant get it to work I'll just have to slip the old Gefore4 Ti4200 back in :?

Is it a PCI or AGP card? Don't know how much difference it makes, but mine is AGP, works fine.
