Great Cleave

Post by korak » Fri Aug 26, 2005 5:33 pm

Can someone tell me how Great Cleave actually works? I have always been curious to this. I guess I need to get my D&D books out and read on it. :)

Example: Character with 4 attacks 21/16/11/6 and attacking a group of things.

First attack hits and kills. Now do I cleave until I miss or quit killing, then go on to the 2nd attack and if it hits, cleave until I miss or quit killing? Or do I do all of my attacks and if I kill something, then go onto cleave?

I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello?), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voice-mail. What did you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away?

You only cleave on hits where you kill an enemy, but you will cleave each and every time you do kill an enemy.
The basic Cleave feat only lets you do it once/round.

Cleave

If a character with this feat kills an opponent, he gets a free attack against any opponent who is within melee range.

Great Cleave

As Cleave, except that there is no limit to the number of additional attacks that the character may make after killing one opponent.

... as long as he/she keeps killing with each hit.

Ok, just to make sure, with my first example:

First attack hits and kills. (great cleave kicks in)
hit and kill again, hit and kill again, hit and kill again, hit but the opponent is still alive. (great cleave is done)

Now my second attack finishes off the opponent. (great cleave kicks in) hit and kill again, hit and kill again, miss (great cleave is done)

Now my third attack misses (no great cleave)

Now my fourth attack hits and kills (great cleave kicks in) hit and kill again....until I miss or do not kill the oppoenent that is being cleaved.

Is this correct?

Yes. Unfortunately NWN is like doing surgery with a club. Each strike takes a bit of time, so the engine keeps making great cleaves, but the game time goes on, so technically you can cleave for several rounds while others are doing stuff (including the enemy). Basically you are locked in the round while the world continues. By the way, I think I have gotten off 40+ great cleaves in a single round on little bugs (just to see how many I could get.)

While we are on the subject of Great Cleavage:

This is not correct. There's more information on this on the fighter boards but Great Cleave will kick in whenever you kill an enemy with any of your attacks, not just when you kill an enemy with a Great Cleave attack.

Moved to NWN General Discussion.

Great cleave stops abruptly when destroying things with devastating critical.
"Therefore the skillful leader subdues the enemy's troops without any fighting; he captures their cities without laying siege to them; he overthrows their kingdom without lengthy operations in the field." Sun Tzu, Art of War.

Wanna know how great cleave works? Take a trip with someone reasonably strong through Summerleaf farms watch them take out 30 or 40 stirges in one turn.

It's also fun in the Mikona sewers with 6 (or is it 8 ) fire beetles.
