Changing race in the middle of the game.

I made an ghost elf to start out with and did all the necessary things but every time i logged on id hadnt changed, so i just played a normal elf, and that was ok wasnt anything i could do about it.After a week playing my elf character, suddenly he had changed to ghost elf and the worst thing was that i had to start from the beginning with the xp points.Im lost here i love this character but what the %/((%(!"#!? Please somebody tell me something.
