I really need help. NWN will not work online. please?

Post by madhatter » Sun Oct 12, 2003 11:11 pm

Well im at a loss for what to do. I finally got the power issue figured out, and now NWN will just not work online. I get about half way through character generation, and the screen goes black followed by a system hang. If I use a pre existing character, I get about 2 minutes in game and then the same thing happens. At this point, all I can do is reboot. Single player works just fine, but obviously this isint why I own the game. I tried bioware forums, but they all seem pretty clueless.

Ive tried doing a clean boot, disabling smartgart, bring audio acceleration down to basic in dxdiag, turned off agp texture acceleration in dxdiag, brought down hardware acceleration 2 notches, re installed nwn, formated computer, updating catylist drivers, sound drivers, and windows xp, installed dx 9, disabled hardware mouse in nwn config, and lowerd graffics settings in nwn config.

windows xp pro
amd xp barton 2800 @3200
radeon 9800 all in wonder pro (new catylist drivers and direct x 9.b)
corsair xms LL pc3200 2x512
maxtor 120 gig hd
asus a7n8x deluxe motherboard

Online mode will not work with sou or just plan nwn.

Jesus... that's a sad story man. Did it work before? What changes were made before the crashes started? Is your CD badly scratched? (so if you reinstall, you might be installing corrupted files). Sorry to hear this.

It worked fine, and then I built this computer. I even took a second look at the hardware, but it all checks out fine. This along with the fact that the game works in single player, and every other game I own works great tells me its gotta be something with bioware.

That firewall is disabled, and I tried doing a connection stright from the cable modem to this computer with no firewall.

It gave me this error after one of the crashes.

"VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands."

But why would something like this only happen during multiplayer?

I have an old version of catalyst installed on my computer (3.6 iirc), if you want I can get it to you. I doubt that would help at all, but it says its a graphics problem, so its worth a shot...

3.8 is working fine on my 9700... still worth a shot though. How does the rest of the net work for you? Can you browse fine? Can you play other games fine, etc.?

I would like to ask if you have recovered other problems with your internet connection. Possibly your network-controller needs an update or is broken or even a fu***** brand  .

The nic is acctually onboard, but the nicest I have had yet. As far as surfing and other online games, not a single problem. IVe been told it sounds like a heat problem from the error I get so im gonna check out the airflow in this thing and probably re apply some artic silver. If ya see me on tonight, ya know I was successful. :D

Thoughts on problem solving connection to Avlis

1) Are you approved to play on the servers? did you receive email confirmation with server addresses and passwords?

The general information forum has been a major assest for me to figure out my problems and make it to the online world of Avlis: viewforum.php?f=98

2) Do you have the hak paks installed for the world?

Look at the Avlis newbie FAQ: viewtopic.php?t=16648 Point #15 ... HakPaks may be found on the Avlis FTP server:
ftp://avlis.blackdagger.net/public%20downloads/
needed haks individually (look in the hakpaks directory):
CoPaPHak1_0.rar - needed for all servers.
UniversalHak2_0.rar - needed for all servers.
Drylands_high.zip / Drylands_low.zip - needed for the wilderness. You can choose between lo and hi res version
jess_treecity.rar - needed for Le Or T'Nanshi
DeglosHaks.rar - needed for Deglos
CR_H.rar - new hak for avlis 1 Sept 2003
Problems with unpacking: Use WinRAR.
Warning: If you play on any other worlds and have installed/modified the game files for that other world you may get a crash when you try to play on Avlis. I had this happen. Any file modification that occurs outside of the "hak" directory (for instance the override directory) will apply to all game worlds you log into.

So, you need to have the unmodified game installed for all worlds. The work-around is to have an override for each world you play on and rename them each time before opening the game. So you would have "override_avlis" and maybe "override_greyhawk", etc. then when you want to play avlis you quickly rename override_avlis to override and you are "good to go".

3) I can say I ran into the black screen of death upon character creation too. This is a bioware bug and has little to do with Avlis. I believe you can read about it in the FAQ, viewtopic.php?t=16648 item #22.

4) Be sure to pick your diety at character creation to match your alignment. Keep in mind that your alignment will change if you (a) kill citizens/npcs or (2) rob houses/chests/npcs.

Write your diety info down so you don't forget. I hate to say it but it pays to know which dieties have a presence in the game. From a character perspective, the character would know the gods by reputation so it is more realistic to pick a god that has a temple, etc.

firewalls

Post by Worgain » Tue Oct 14, 2003 5:58 pm

another thing: firewalls can block internet access of the game. It seems to me that you want to open your firewall software and make sure to allow your NWN programs to access the internet. The files that need to access internet include:
1) C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\nwmain.exe
2) C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\nwserver.exe (if you DM but don't need as an Avlis player)
3) C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\nwupdate.exe

If this works then it was probably a firewall setting issue. I do not recommend leaving your firewall down for extended periods of time... it just opens you up to hackers and viruses.

Multiplayer can be quite intense on your video performance. I had a 64 MB card that was great for every game I had... until I played online. I upgraded to a 128 MB card and the problem is solved.

"VPU recovery" to me indicates you might have incompatability between the video card drivers and the DirectX version. Consult your card manufacturer for the latest drivers. The only way to install an earlier version of DirectX is to reinstall windows. DirectX 9 overwrites some key files and can not be removed.

It was a heat issue. I guess single player wasent working my system over the top, but multiplayer was. I took this thing apart, re arranged the fans, and re applied some thermal paste and I havent had a problem since. The weird thing was, the temp monitor program that came with my motherboard was showing 43 degrees celcius. The bios, right after a crash was showing 65! Thanks a lot to everybody that helped. See ya all i game. :D
