Losing internet connection when playing NWNs/Avlis

Post by danskmacabre » Tue Sep 16, 2003 7:52 am

This is a known problem specifically with NWNs, after a while of playing NWNs online, the game knocks out my internet connection and I have to reset my ADSL modem and reboot to get it back.

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and if they solved it.

HELP!

WEll, I thought it might be that I have MSN messenger running in background, so I disabled that, but then it happened again.

I'm going to disable my anti-virus program and ad checker program as well, but I doubt that will work.

The other thing worth trying is, if you have a router/firewall/proxy, is to open the following ports,
6667 (IRC)
3783 (Voice Chat Port)
27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
28900 (Master Server List Request)
29900 (GP Connection Manager)
29901 (GP Search Manager)
13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
6515 (Dplay UDP)
6500 (Query Port)

Which is what NWNs needs to run properly, but most modern router etc should handle these correctly automatically, still, I'll try it tonight.
I got the port information from the official NWNs forum, which was poted by a moderator there, so it ought ot be safe to do this.

Anyway, if anyone else has solved this problem, then post here please.

This is what I got off the official Atari site..

Make sure your firewall, NAT or router has the proper ports open
Neverwinter Nights uses UDP, not TCP for its connections.

If you think that your firewall is preventing you from connecting to the game servers, please make sure that the following ports are open:

Ports 5120 through 5300

If you are not sure how to make sure these ports are open please contact your router or firewall manufacturer.

If you are wanting to make sure that your NAT is set up to allow the game to play, here are some details:

Outgoing packets:
Source port: 5120-5129
Destination port: 5121-5300
Incoming packets:
Source port: 5121-5300
Destination port: 5120-5129

make sure you have task manager disabled

one other thing that will cause a crash is your task manager. It's obvious when your virus scanner starts to run and boots you but, you can also get booted if your system lags because it might be checking to see if there is a new virus defination available.

So, right-click on that task manager and disable it before playing.
