Wireless gaming

Post by Albion » Wed Apr 17, 2013 8:15 am

I am currently with Virgin media and i am having one of the new fancy TVio boxes fitted. Part of the new package is a broadband upgrade no problem there we all want a faster connection.

But the new broadband package will be wireless. I have always had a wired connection before with a network cable fitted to a modem. NWN runs fine with this. I dont really need a wireless connection. And i am one of the school if its not broken dont fix it.

My question for those who play online games with a wireless connection, do online games like NWN play better or worse with a wireless connection?

They're fine. No real difference nowadays. You do occasionally get flakey connections, just reset the box.

Do remember to password it, though. ;)

Since when is wireless an upgrade to wire? And is it WLAN, cellphone kind of wireless? >_>
(I'd much rather have 10Mbit wire than 500Mbit wireless myself. :)

I don't think latency(delay) will pose much problem in NWN. But Wireless transmission will have some order of magnitude higher dropped and out-of-(sequential)order compared to wire, and that varies depending on your router, signal strength, EM-environment (maybe more?)

I don't know how well nwn handles those, but as stated above it should be fine unless it turns out to be exceptionally bad.

Under normal conditions wireless will be fine. Some of the issues S_N pointed out could be an issue, but those are unlikely in normal household circumstances. Obviously there will be exceptions.

What I am curious about is what sort of "broadband package" forces only wireless connections to be used? That doesn't really make any sense to me.

Over here it usually goes:

1.) DSL/Cable Line --wired--> ISP Modem --1 port, wired--> Computer
2.) DSL/Cable Line --wired--> ISP Modem --1 port, wired--> Router --wired/wireless--> Computer(s)
3.) DSL/Cable Line --wired--> ISP Modem/Router wired/wireless combo--> Computer(s)

Does it not fall into one of those 3 categories? Some ISPs put out modem/router combos that typically provide 4 ports wired as well as wireless connection. I don't recommend these, I like having Modem from ISP and use your own Router but to each their own.
