Taking the temperature on Avlis

Post by Caltore » Tue Apr 27, 2010 9:22 am

Hey all!

I have been playing Avlis since about 2006 now. Although last year I haven't really been online at all,
and some time before that it was very on and off as well. These past 1,5 - 2 years RL events have made Avlis, among other stuff, the last thing on my mind.

Now I am trying to find my way back, poping in online every now and then when there's time. I have missed this!

So I thought I'd just ask; what's it like nowadays?
What's the player base like, is there still a good deal of people around? Have many stopped playing or leaft for Avlis 2?
Getting any new applications? Are there some neat new things I should know?

I have been thinking about going on Avlis 2... but I'm not sure.
I don't remember hearing that much good about it, although that was a while ago.

It's good to be comming back!

Bests

No no all good!

welcome back!

Avlis is.. "tighter " these days.. we got a great team that works really well, maybe less players, but it means more events..

I think you will like it :)

Welcome back!

Plenty still around, and we've gotten some new faces as well. Portals to offworld are back, and a few new systems have gone in or been enhanced. It's still fun :)

Thaylis Beign: Morgan, did you cast recitation?
Morgan Thornheart: Yes

Yes! Our player numbers are increasing, new areas and systems are coming out regularly. What class are you interested in? There's something new for about half of them...

We're active and intend to be even moreso as they months go by!

Thanks for replying everyone!

Maybe it's a good thing that Avlis is "tighter" now. I remember back when I started that it was quite difficult to get immersed in the game, get some DM love and such, becuse there were just so many of us! That changed when I took Leto up to Cytheria, probably bacuse it wasn't as crowded as the south.

Well... Leto, my main, is a Palemaster. My alt, Alma, is a psion. Anything new there?
Did notice that there's a psion guild with a tower and all now. I'm planing a little fieldtrip for her to go find it.

The psion guild is currently heavily involved in certain goings-on in the world, in Euro-friendly playtimes.

I suspect you'll enjoy the increased DM love. It's a lot easier to be involved since the team is great and the players that are left are solid. And, added bonus, you probably won't have your corpse looted! Yeah to that. It was too common and annoying back in the day.

When we say "the players that are left", we're down to about 50% of our 2006 totals.... but that was still 995 unique players (not characters, players) in 2009. There are still quite a lot of us by any world's standards. :)

I should probably go take a good look at the Wiki to catch up on a few things then.
Like recent history in Visimontium for instance. I remember a lot of major things used to happen there all the time, that my characthers should be aware of.

And the psion guild sounds very interesting!

Yupp... I'll be sticking around! :D
I can already feel the Avlis Receptors tingling!!

Dear staff, please don't foig my post, thanks.
Caltore wrote:Hey all!

So I thought I'd just ask; what's it like nowadays?

A lot of areas have been redone in newer and prettier tile sets. The wilderness is green now. There is a big Shaahesk (lizard) invasion last time I checked. They've taken the eastern bits of M'Chek and T'Nanshi and are being a general pain in the everywhere. You can even play a Shaahesk or scaly sympathizer and join the cause. Other than the war there are various large and small events.

What's the player base like, is there still a good deal of people around? Have many stopped playing or leaft for Avlis 2?

I am still here so the player base is still awesome. Not so many have left for Avlis 2 to my knowledge, system hardware may have something to do with it. Others, like myself, have a harder time with the NWN 2 interface. You should be able to see some familiar new faces. The player base is pretty chill, and a lot of people like to hang around just chatting at various points of interest (the rock, elf gate, zvid).

Getting any new applications? Are there some neat new things I should know?

I don't know what systems were in when you left. Lycanthropy? Advanced Magic Specilizations? Barbarian Rage Specializations? Militant Levels? All 9 Holy Warrior Classes? Psionics? Druid and Ranger pet training and custom pets? Player Merchants? The sprinkler system (zerub)?

Also there is a slough of new dungeons, some pretty amazing, even epic (nightfang to mention one).

rofl, we love ya twigs and good answers!!

Btw, that outfit of yours is looking a bit wrinkled. Maybe you and Zerub should meet up so that he can moisten that thing up, so some of those wrinkled might fall out. ;) I think it is time for the Fort Karr Irregulars to have an outing. Would love one last romp around with ya.

Caltore, welcome back to Avlis!

As far as the NWN2 thing goes.....I think Avlis has such a good player base, why would anyone want to go elsewhere? I know that people talk about NWN1 becoming old, but to me it really does not matter. It is not about the playability of the game, but the people that I play with in the game. We have some of the best players around.....and yeah.....I'll have to agree with twigs.....he is AWESOMENESS!

I do remember Leto, he was around when Flenken was just a fledgling little fat gnome trying to learn magic. :D

We've actually had a resurgence of old players coming back around after a year or more away, and as Spool said, the numbers have been climbing again. We've gotten some new players as well who have definitely made a nice splash and jumped right into Avlis.

Avlis is (as of last count) making enough from monthly subscribed donations to run in the black every month, with some additional donations to go towards things like part replacement purchases/upgrades. That means that so long as the servers have a home, the world has DMs and players, and a giant fucking asteroid doesn't wipe us out in 2012... we'll be around for a good while yet :D

Tindertwiggy and Korak:
I think I have heared about most of that stuff looking around on the forums and Wiki. Not sure about Lycanthropy and Militant levels.

Yeah, I signed up on the Avlis 2 forums and had a look around at screenies and such. Sure the graphics are much better. But I don't know. Can't imagine that it's gone through as many updates and extra stuff as Avlis, and I'm not sure about who plays there. Besides, I kind of like the outdated graphics of Avlis 1. There something genuine about it! I did download a little reemake of the tilesets though, the one that might add a few extra trees. It's sooooo nice!

Grunt:
And I remember Flenken! He was absolutely hilarious!! You played him so well. Do you ever let him out to play nowadays?

Perhaps there is an Avlis revival among those of us who left? I hope so!

I play Avlis 2 on occasion, it is a gorgeous world. My computer has issues when I play though so I don't get on as often as I'd like. I've noticed a few people trying to get new players/old players on there lately.
It's chaos, be kind.

I tried NWN2 and some other persistent worlds (prior to Avlis 2), but I can't get past the new user interface. I just don't like it at all.

The PC requirements are also an issue, but the interface was the main thing for me. I love the radial interface of NWN1, and could never get used to the new one, even enough to finish all the NWN2 single player campaigns.

Hey, to heck with THAT! She's already signed up as a founding member of the Order of the Diamond Sphere!

Which, if Alma comes back, would make for 2 active members of that Order... :/

But DO come back to Avlis 1! It just keeps getting better.
