Stopping Your PC's Attack

Post by GunnJ » Wed Jul 22, 2009 10:16 pm

Sometimes during a fight a character may need to stop attacking their opponent, whether because you don't want to DP them, or perhaps the DM crashed during the fight and isn't there to control the NPC, or what have you.

Oftentimes, especially if your character is using a ranged weapon, simply clicking on the ground doesn't stop the PC, they just step to the side and keep right on shooting.

To really stop fighting, look at the upper left-hand corner of your game screen. You will see the "attack" symbol, a dagger inside a square. Click on that symbol and your character will stop fighting.

For the mages out there, I don't know about you, but my character always wants to cast Wierd when autoattack kicks in. If you have fast enough reflexes, you can stop whatever casting your PC has started by clicking on the symbol for that spell up in the left-hand corner.

If you don't have fast reflexes, practice apologizing.

Notably, this works too when your PC is confused and randomly attacks people.

Now THIS is interesting!

As for casting as an autoattack, I can't remember that ever happening with any caster character. When does that kick in for you?

Had that happen to El'gos a couple of times during a contest. Fight was over, I hadn't set my opponent to neutral yet, and WHAM! Here comes a Wail of the Banshee and death planes him...

As far as I know there is no conclusive answer to that question. It's rare and it's annoying. Curiously enough, when it happens and there are multiple hostile people in the area it triggers everyone.

Its only ever happened to me when I am hostile to someone and they are not, or vice versa. It can even be something as simple as someone setting you to neutral after cvc, and you're just about to go neutral yourself, and BAM that small amount of time is enough to get meteor swarm cast and 5 people go to bleeding. :(

I would comment on using this to stop the effects of confusion and say that it might be pretty close to metagaming engine issues. I wouldn't do it.

As for stopping attacks....I don't understand.

Yeah, thought of that too. Probably right, just don't do it. I had no idea you could stop that though, and it seems like I've been playing the game forever. Learn something every day.

Luckily Vilne tries to shoot his bow without any arrows most of the time. Apparently chain lightning isn't high on the queue. :P

Having killed everyone else in the party on several occasions while confused, I have to ask: why?

You said clicking to move doesn't work... you need to click further away! ;)
If you click too close to your current position it reads it as a combat move order rather than a proper move order.
Well, it SHOULD do anyway, the engine does do weird things at times.

Yeah, I've had my character, for one reason or another, really really hate on someone in autoattack. Sometimes he just punches, other times the AI will kick in and do a stunning fist followed immediately by a quivering palm and an IKD, just in case. I for one am glad he can't be confused any more.

I think you can just hit the escape button?

Why would you want to stop attacking people while confused? No fun! If people forget to give Smeec mind protection, or go cheap with only protection from evil, I hope he does get confused (though his ac goes to shit while flatfooted). Messy, messy fun!!!

I am serious about that, and also agree you shouldn't be able to stop with this trick. Sounds like exploiting the engine to me.

The absolute best about autoattacking is your character suddenly equipping other stuff, like IDable gear you want to keep secret, or even using stuff they shouldn't be able to use. I've had my Confounder casting spells she doesn't have.

Putting my Team Hat(TM) on I can safely say: For reasons I would think obvious, under these circumstances one shouldn't be able to stop attacking so please refrain from doing this as technically it constitutes an exploit of the game engine.

I did not know this, but I find it useful when you are mining, about to get full and want to shovel ore into your bags. You can stop mining without running off a ways to stop the mining process.

Getting back to that, just a nudge sideways using the movement keys will stop fighting and queued spellcasting too. That doesn't work for confusion though.

No, it doesn't. I use my movement keys all the time in battle, while my character is casting or fighting, and it doesn't stop my PC's combat at all.

That is the point of why I started this thread. Just a nudge sideways does NOT work reliably. Clicking near your character doesn't work reliably. Clicking further away from your character may not be an option, still doesn't work reliably, and drags your character 10, 20 ft across the screen.

Click on the combat icon and stop fighting. That's it. Then you don't have to apologize as the DM has to reset all the NPCs, or apologize and pay for someone's resurrection.

Yeah..who would want to stop that confusion anyways. It was great fun getting confused, chasing Raran to a dead end and then dev critting him. :P
