Toolset Troubles...

Post by Brayon » Wed Jun 11, 2008 2:14 am

I don't get it. Since I updated to Vista, everytime I run the toolset, I get massive errors. Some sort of .dll error, can not write to address. I looked up info on the Bioware site (ROFLMAO), and it said to use the critcal rebuild for 1.68 to rewrite the toolset files. I do, and it works one time. Then I get the .dll errors,a nd the cycle continues again.

Has anyone else run into this, and is there a way to fix it?

I'm not familiar with Vista at all, but I know that when I updated my nvidia drivers recently, I had a horrible time with the toolset and errors. Which dll file is it reporting with an error?

The options Ihad were, downgrading my nvidia drivers to an older version or right clicking on the nwntoolset.exe file and turning on compatability mode to win98 for that file. I chose the compatability thing and that seems to have worked for me. I'm not sure if that is an option in Vista (if its even related to your problem)

Try disabling Vista UAC also if you haven't. Quite a few things get pissy about running if it's on.

Its the nv***.dll. Cant remember it full. I think it might be the nVidia drivers, and I do have the UAC off. One opf the first things I killed.

Thanks.

i haven't been able to get my toolset to work right in vista yet. i've tried rolling back the drivers and everything else--nothing helps. it also didn't help to change the compatability mode. i'm just building on an old computer now.

I figured out how to fix the .dll troubles.

The problem was that the Toolset + nVidia Driver + Duel Core Processor = Errors. So it wasn't a Vista thing. The solution... (which I did find on the Bioware forum... *coughs, and grumbles*) is this:

Open up note pad.
Type: start /affinity 0x01 nwtoolset.exe
Save As: RunNWNToolset.bat
Save In: your neverwinternights/nwn folder

The .bat is what fixes it, and it does so by forceing the toolset to work on one core only. In this case it would be the primary core of a dual core. The problem seems to happen only on machines with nVidia drivers/vid cards. ATI seems to be immune to the problem.

I have a dual core processor and an NVidia card. Mine runs fine and never had to edit it. I've also seen it use both processors before.

I was getting these same errors in XP pro, I made a shortcut to the toolset on the desktop, ran it in win98/ME mode, no problems with crashes since, only issue is when exiting the toolset, NWToolset.exe stays running, which requires me to terminate it via processes in the task manager, a minor inconvenience.

Same thing was happening on exit as well. The above fix took care of that as well. :)

@Darkfire: Not sure... perhaps its only a few nVidia Drivers/vid cards that are doing it? I have a 7300 card in my machine.

I got it with a GeForce 9500M GS on XP Pro, but upgrading nVidia drivers fixed it (to 17x.xx, if I recall).

Code: Select all
