The Spot/Listen debate always seems to be framed in terms of what will help you against other PCs.
But getting a Spot decent enough to detect NPC monsters who don't have the benefit of all the gear that PCs can get, can be done rather easily if you have Spot as a class skill.
And let me tell you, it helps.

I agree with Krator. My main has a listen in the 50s, and can hear whispers from a good distance. My alt has no listen at all, and can hear someone standing close to him, but about 6 game feet (the size of the human male model) the conversation is lost. That and the DMs have stated the same.Krator wrote:Yes, it will!Anyamaur wrote:No, it won't.Krator wrote:Listen is awesome, because it extends the range you can hear whispers in.

Re: expertise and power attack
No ammount of either skill will help you against an opponent that goes invisible (via spell or potion). Just not going to happen. Spot has no effect on invisibility, at all, ever. And even if you can still hear them, the combat engine will stop attacking, no matter what. You will have to reselect your opponent and reactivate your feats.downsystem wrote:So i was just trying to figure out which skill (listen or spot) will help keep them on durring the times when you fight a creature thats invisible or one thats dissipeared because of their hide in shadows abilities.
The ONLY way to combat this is to have See Invisibility up and running, in which case they never go invisible, so you never stop attacking.
Now, for Hide in Plain Sight, you are also out of luck, if I am not mistaken. Your opponent uses HiPS, and hey dissapear. Nothing to be done about it. No ammount of Spot will stop this from happening. Now, at the end of the round, and beginning of the next, you can spot them again. At that point, you will have to reselect them for attack, and re-acivate your feats.
It sucks, but that's the way it is.
