*Demands Deider's status below his name be changed to "The Great Ganoom"*Nightshade wrote:Following Deider the Sage's line of thinking (although you should feel free to call him the Great Ganoom), you may start off by building a character, getting to know the place, and then building another character to serve as your main. It will give you a really good feel for the place in general, and you can decided for yourself which skills and feats and builds are well suited to the place. Keep in mind the restrictions on prestige classes and such... it always sucks to reach a certain point with a certain build in mind and then find out you can't take a class or it's very difficult to get a certain class or piece of gear you were counting on.

and as an old table-top gamer i've got to say i have been very happy with the world of avlis. as someone already pointed out, it doesn't seem as though you're leveling slow (and if you're REALLY into crafting you'll get xp gradually anyways.....) and unlike other servers i've played, on avlis you are always planning your next level- not flying up levels while asking yourself, "hmm... what feat would be good." on avlis you have time to flesh out your character and really think about what would work best for you.
i've played six or eight other servers..... and avlis is what online d&d should be all about- and then some.
so just give it some time, read A LOT about the worlds and whatnot, and enjoy.... you'll be addicted within a week.

I'm sure there's enough posts on here, without me adding to the madness, but what the heck...
If you want to lvl fast, like others have said, its not easy, but its well worth the effort... (I have played this char for 3 weeks now and he's almost lvl 6) If you see anyone try going up and talking to them IC and tell them you are new to the area, and wanted to know if they could show you around, sometimes they will show you a good place to mine, sometimes a good place to "vanquish some evil"... If you REALLY need to feel like you're pumping your char up, or whatever you call it, go to Elysia, and do farming quests, and FedEx quests, you can be lvl 3 in a few hours.... And make sure to introduce yourself to lots of people.... Hmmmm... Lets see what else?.... Oh yeah, use the forums, A LOT... And as far as magic items go.... I have two chars, lvl 6 & lvl 5, and I have only found ONE magic item....
Yeah... I really wish I wouldn't have wrote all this, cuz if you play for a while you'll see how you're gonna like it.... Anyway, welcome to Avlis, and have fun playing.

I understand that part of the D&D fun is building Interesting, powerful PC's.A Wanderer wrote:Looks that way. *laughs* I've since completely 180ed on my approach to the server. My build is totally borked. I'm going a totally different direction.
remember that in Avlis you can become "Epic" by respected for your RP.
Combine the two and we'll expect to see you in the Heros of Avlis list

Leveling To Epic LVl's in Avlis is very slow and gaining good gear is very difficult.
But thats what I like about it. everyone is on the same lvl.
Note: In over a year of playing I only know of 2 40th level PC's.

I also tend to not quite ignore, but pay little attention to an Epic Level character if I have not at least heard of them before meeting them. Now, they can win me over, but they will be starting from a position of me assuming they are either an off-worlder, or a 1337 dude.

I somewhat disagree, the point of Avlis is to have FUN.GG26 wrote:I played my char for over a year and he's only level 13... and i had many months of 14 hour days. then we've seen people hit 20 in the blink of an eye. leveling is not the point of avlis.
If Fun to you is Rping all day with zero exp then great.
If Fun to you is crafting and selling stuff to make coin then great.
If fun to you is Bashing monsters all day and trying to obtain uber gear and geto 40th lvl then great.
Hopefully whatever you do is well-rounded and not to the extreme and you make some friends and you are respectful the RP integrity of the world.
You'll get no disagreement from me there!pedsdmd wrote:I somewhat disagree, the point of Avlis is to have FUN
Yes, and no. Great for the person having fun perhaps, but alas their PGing will likely detract from the fun being had by other players preferring to focus on RP.pedsdmd wrote:If fun to you is Bashing monsters all day and trying to obtain uber gear and geto 40th lvl then great
The point of Avlis being an "RP PW" is to provide a place for like minded players who enjoy RP to have a place to do their thing free from the distractions of those who don't.
There's nothing wrong in absolute terms with "bashing monsters all day" (hell, I enjoyed Diablo back in the day too!) but the stated position of the Team is that there is on this particular PW.
That's the ticket; everything in moderation. But you were just playing Devil's advocate earlier, I'm sure ...pedsdmd wrote:Hopefully whatever you do is well-rounded and not to the extreme and you make some friends and you are respectful the RP integrity of the world.

I try whenever possible to play Avlis with the intention of making it more fun for everyone else that's playing - generally this in turn leads to me having more fun myself. Something like "the more you put in, the more you get out"
of course it doesn't always happen like that .... but I think in general, if people had other's fun as their priority, then things would be even better. Levelling to 40th in a month may be fun for the person involved (although that's debatable), but does it increase the fun for the community as a whole?
so in summary (and obviously just in my opinion), "the point of Avlis is to make it fun for as many other people as possible"
