Everyone will be guessing at the problem until you provide a bit more information about your system. Can you find out the make and model number of the computer you are using and post it here? E.g. HP Pavilion 12345 or whatever other nifty info is on those stickers on the back of it? At least that will give us a place to start looking up the rest.

Oh, and for those guesses: viewtopic.php?p=1341990#p1341990

CPU affinity is a major one, but there are many other suggestions there in the links, and in other posts. On board graphic chips have been known to suck, but NWN is over 10 years old. You should be able to get it running fairly smoothly at least.

took it up to Dorkfire's, it was apparently a glitchy graphics driver. Updated and works fine now. If I could only remember to check the little things first

I have NWN working, but there is enough chop to not make playing worth the trouble. I'm still trying to figure out the issue. I have Vista 64 SP2,2.0 Ghz dual intel cpu, 2 GB memory, ATI Radeon HD 6700 series card (PCIe).

I also have the NWN complete (NWN+NWN2+all expansions, premuim content...)

AMD drivers, I am using the 12.1 drivers with the atioglxx.dll in the NWN folder (the 12/7/12, 5153 kb version).

I didn't install CEP or anything Avlis with this new install, yet.

I've tried CPU affinity everywhere from -2 to 4. Nothing has an impact.

What is really odd, is that my intro movies actually work, no crashes.

Shiney water is disabled, so are eviron shadows, running in 800x600 mode, I didn't set anything to admin/compatability this time around and it all still works, albeit choppy.

Ideas?

Try older drivers maybe. Look for Neverwinter Nights stable drivers, or something along those lines. When I get some more time I'll try digging into getting this going for you.

Also make sure you try running NWN in different compatibility modes.

Agreeing with Dakfire here (it can happen :P ), so check the first post in this topic about older vs. newer ATI drivers.

I'll give a hunt for more NWN friendly drivers. I did try compatability mode XP SP2 (SP3 isn't a choice). The last install of the game on another disk, I HAD to do compatability. On the current SSD drive which is also my C: drive, compatability makes it crash. It runs without it but slightly less choppy  ~ weird eh?. I dunno why that is, but I'm okay with it.

Maybe I should go way back to like 2007 drivers?

I'll post any progress I make. Thanks for helping me on this! I truely appreciate it! :D

The good and the bad...

The bad...I updated, rolled back traded all sorts of atioglaa.dll versions, looked for openGL articles , help boards and beat the box with a screw driver (not too bright, I know..but it felt nice), and the uncooperative ATI/AMD HD 6750 will not run NWN smooth. It will run it, but not very happily. *hrmph*

The good.... it suddenly came to mind the my micro board has on-board graphics. Several updates later (and a switch of the cord), I'm running a damn smooth NWN! Yay!

The ugly...I'm thinking ATI/AMD lost a customer. Anyone ever have all these issues with an N-Vidia card?

Now if I can get my GS/vault issue squared away so I can rejoin the player/support base.

Sleep first.

Thank you for the help and advice to the folks in the posts above! I appreciate the effort! Thank you!

My only annoyance with Nvidia was way back when they had some texture issues with NWN (the checkerboard thing), that they just wouldn't fix for a very long time. Same thing with having to use old drivers for months (years?). Haven't had a problem since they fixed it, though I'm currently using an old ATI card. I kind blew up my old Nvidia one (literally, with a split capacitor from too much overclocking). Mind you, I haven't had a very new card to try either (actually I do, but nothing that can use it), so maybe some new issues have come up, but I haven't heard of them here.

Since it is so old, I use the old omega drivers, which have lots of tweaks. They only glitch if I turn off the Catalyst AI completely (invisible textures... like my own PC. Doh!), but they work better on low anyway. I'd always go with Nvidia over ATI, given the option, and that started long before NWN came out even. Their driver interface software has always sucked for starters, even if they did start making better hardware in later years.

Just my opinion.
