A little technical advice please
I was experimenting with my USB external drive recently, well the actual run of events started when I bought Tomb Raider and had no space on my internal drive so I installed it on my external drive…it runs fine…I finished Tomb Rainder but not before I had a thought… “I’m off on holiday soon and my wife always takes her work laptop with her, now what if I was to load NWN & Avlis onto an external drive could I then play when on my hols”…a good idea?
So I loaded my entire NWN folder onto my iPod this was an advanced version of the idea because I’ll be carrying my iPod on holiday anyway…as a test I plugged it into USB to my office computer and it runs…amazed I tried to log on to Avlis and get a “master server not found” message. The single player game runs fine but I can’t seem to get online…
So the question is what else am I missing to allow me to run this set up…I can’t install anything on my wife’s machine as they have a pretty strict policy but it looks like I can run anything from the iPod…do I need to load up gamespy or something like that?
Thanks

Maybe there is a firewall installed on your wife's laptop. The firewall could block the connection to the servers of Avlis. Check the firewall

it's looking more and more likely that it's a firewall issue, I havn't tried this set up on mywife's laptop only on my office desktop machine.
I did try direct connecting, using on of the BAT routines and got the same "cannot Find master server message" I will try her laptop tonight althought she connects through a VPN so I may not be able to do this...still I'll be able to play the single player...I've yet to play the three premium modules on the Kingmaker disk...note to self "remember to take a mouse on holiday...I hate those glidey pad thingy's laptops have."
Thanks

1) Does it connect properly when used normally (as installed on the internal drive)?
2) Did you install it to the portable device, or just copy the stuff?

Thanks
1) my set up works fine from my internal drive.
2) No all I did was copy the complete NWN folder onto the iPod (all 6 gig of it).
When I first ran it from the iPod on my office machine I recieved a message saying "unable to obtain version information, run update from main menu". I did this and it visited the update site and confirmed my version (it didn't download anyting just changed the 1.01 to 1.67 in the top left corner). it then ran fine in single player.
sorry I never thought this would be as complex...just thought it would be a great was to be portable and play while on holiday.

In theory it should just work...
I wholesale copied my NWN install to another PC so that I could easily do toolset work on there while I played on my main rig.
My bet is probably firewall issues with your wifes work set up, becuase she connects via VPN all internet bound network traffic will pass through the work firewall which probably has the 51** range of ports blocked by default.

Um, are you saying that if I copy my NWN folder onto my Ipod, and hook that up to my work computer, that I can play avlis at work on breaks? Oh, the humanity! (Finally, I'll know what Friday Alibar experiences M-F, 8-4)

I have copied the NWN folder in the past and it has worked. I have also had times where only Direct Connect or batchfiles worked - even with a normal installation.
However, I still think it is more likely to be the firewall than just because you are using your iPod - that is seen just as another hard disk - so it shouldn't make any difference.

Life is never as bad as you think it is, although that doesn't help at the time.
