Weapon Finesse and rapiers...

Post by AyounTheDark » Fri Mar 31, 2006 11:28 pm

Hiya..

I chose the feat weapon finesse for one of my characters. And as it states the rapiers are included in that feat. But funny thing is I was able to work my way to get 2 handy rapiers for my character, but then I see the weapon finesse doesnt work on those.

Is this a modified rule on Avlis for Rapiers and weapon finesse, or could it be a bug?

You can't use two medium sized weapons to get the bonuses... I think it only counts if you use a medium and a small in the off hand.

I could be wrong though, that's just off the top of my head.

Weapon finesse does apply to rapiers, so you can use your DEX bonus instead of STR to calculate your bonus to-hit. However, they still count as medium weapons for the purposes of dual-wielding, so if you have one in each hand, you will take a -4/-4 penalty instead of the -2/-2 for a light off-hand weapon.

Ahh.. Thanx for enlightening me.. :)

I guess I'll need another feat then. Like improved ambidex and/or improved 2 weaponfighting to lower the penalties then? I cant really seem to find those #@£§´% rules anywhere..

Okay, here's a breif run-down of dual wielding penalties with various feats.

No feats, medium off hand weapon: -6/-10
No feats, light off hand weapon: -4/-8
Two-Weapon Fighting, medium off hand weapon: -4/-8
Two-Weapon Fighting, light off hand weapon: -2/-6
Ambidex, medium off hand weapon: -6/-6
Ambidex, light off hand weapon: -4/-4
Ambidex, Two-Weapon fighting, medium off hand weapon: -4/-4
Ambidex, Two-Weapon fighting, light off hand weapon: -2/-2

Improved two weapon fighting gives you a second off-hand attack each round at a penalty of +5. So, with two rapiers, the best you'll be able to do is -4/-4 and two off-hand attacks, I'm afraid.

HMm but what if you are a wemic dual weilding,,,two rapiers would be small for them.

Then in the case of a Wemic, I suppose you'd be cool to dual wield without penalty. If you do still get a penalty, then lets blame the NWN engine. That's the best skapegoat ever.

The whole misunderstanding comes from the manual where it sais in the description of the rapier that it makes a perfect off-hand weapon....

Exactly right. almost anything a wemic can use offhanded only counts as a light weapon. I have tested this

This also counts for changelings taking on large forms: Giants, minotaurs and the like. Try dual-wielding a two-handed sword and a longsword... Not optimum, but fun for kicks!
