A big purchase price and cheap to use makes it a rich players only toy. Personally, I think it would work a lot better, if it was reasonably priced to buy (say 100K) but cost serious money to put items into it, based on weight. Say 100gp / pound.
Poor characters could use it sparingly, with a few items for death runs and some personal items. Rich characters could use it more often to transport things they were trading, or as a mobile inn room. This way, it would be very expensive if anyone wanted to use it to transport iron ore for crafting on a regular basis, but still possible if you were willing to pay many times the ore's real worth.

You bought a bag of holding, or you bought a hole?Krator wrote:500 gold - That's what I bought mine for on Catara.

A portable persistent chest - About the same Deider described, but then with a load more inventory and no gold cost per item put in/removed. Also you can only put it down in suitable areas (most interiors).Marleh wrote:You bought a bag of holding, or you bought a hole?Krator wrote:500 gold - That's what I bought mine for on Catara.

If it involved a 1mill+ price tag and it was in a P-world I would much much prefer to build myself a house with a few chests in. A house would allow for much better character development and future rp scenario's. Walking around with a large hole on your person would be more convenient but other than that it would only allow for more bad jokes everytime you tried to pull something out of it, or worse stick it back in!

Some thoughts... OK, maybe a few thoughts *grin*....
In regard to a portable hole being out of character, please consider that some characters roam, have no home, and may not care to have a home. It would be a dream for my character to have one of these portable holes!! (hmmm...yes the jokes would be flying wouldn't they? )
Availability and price would have to be environmentally structured. In Avlis, it's supposed to be low when it comes to magic items. Not to say "times couldn't change". It would not surprise my character that something like this would be very very very expensive.
The idea of the hole being an access to a storage bin, makes the concept of rental a good one. If looking from the merchants perspective, this could be either rare or common to them, but it's all about your market and finding demand and in some ways for a merchant -- getting what you can get.
One time buy should be expensive.
Rental --> a little cheaper (not cheap) to get the hole. Payment for what you store would be logical as your things would be "taking up space". Flat rate for items put in or rate based on size (not weight). Just like when you rent storage spaces now in RL. You don't pay by the weight or the price of the item you are putting in, you pay by the amount of space you are taking up or a flat rate for a certain amount of space. Unless I just am not aware of it working differently.
Interesting idea and nice elaborations and brainstorming from everyone!!! How about a different "name" though? anyone? thoughts?
If they are created, I'll gladly accept one as a gift from anyone (Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha).

I would pay up to 1.5 million, no more.

I'm tired of all this nonsense about beauty being only skin-deep. That's deep enough. What do you want, an adorable pancreas?

1. Those chests have as much inventory as your character or a random NPC has. Exactly as much. I'm too lazy which is more: 25 container inventories, or an NPC backpack space. Someone count the squares and do the math if you want to know.
2. Those chests pick up the weight of everything that's inside once you pick it up, PLUS they weight a full 50 lb to start with. They're useful storage chests that you can store things persistently in, and yes you can lug them around, but they don't reduce your load at all.
So much fun,
yet so little time to enjoy it.

No, it's still a persistent chest. Your stuff, stored safely, from everyone else on the server, beyond server resets.
The difference with Avlis pchests is that Catara pchests are for sale at a merchant in the marketplace, where you can, and are even expected to get them yourself. So if your player housing ever runs out of storage space, I don't have to update the mod. Also if you move you don't have to clean out your chest item by item, but just pick up the whole thing and lug it to a new location. The persistency applies also to the location of the chest, so if you leave it somewhere it will be there next time you go to find it, and nobody but the owner can move it.
We're hijacking this discussion though. I just wanted to point out that what Deider is planning on making has some substantial differences to what Krator is talking about, and is indeed available on Catara for 500 gp (although an increased demand may of course make the price go up, so get there early!

one final hijack/plug:
You can put in full bags into the Catara chests. And they won't empty themselves into the chest, but stay as they are. As you can easily put ~12 bags or so into one PC/NPC inventory page, and you have, what, 6 or so of them... which gives you over 70 bags worth of space!
Did I mention that they keep the content sorted, just as you put things in?
Only caveat: the system isn't entirely bug-free yet, so random chest disappearances still happen. We'll find that bug eventually though, and then it's squashing time!
