Questions on Greater Ruin and Hellball

My char is at a crossroads and some info would help my decision.

Any help with the particulars of the Epic Spells Greater Ruin and Hell Ball would be greatly appreciated.

Greater Ruin is 35d6 of Negative Energy Damage?
If so Negative Energy Protection would negate it?
What kind of saving throw is made against it?

Hell Ball is a reflex saving throw?
I also remember reading something I can't find now that if the first save is made or resisted it negates the rest of the different damages?

Are Greater Ruin and Hell Ball nothing more than pretty light shows with little practicality?

every time ive seen Greater Ruin cast it has done positive energy, not negative, if i recall correctly.

Greater Ruin is 35d6 Positive energy, Fortitude save for half.

Hellball is 40d6 damage (10d6 of 4 elements), and one round knockdown, Reflex save for half.

So, yes, pretty light shows.

The Lord of the Pit and some nice Amber Dragons have Hell Balled me plenty

Just didn't want to be on the receiving end right now for this purpose.
