Good single player mods?

Post by SpectralShadows » Mon Jun 14, 2004 5:42 pm

Aside from Avlis, I'm currently playing single-player through SoU (and will then go on to HotU).
I'm currently in the place with the golems, spiders & crumbly books - it's a bit depressing, and I want to take a break.
So I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good single player mods that I could start a new character in... preferably an outside one (or at least not a gloomy underground place.)

Oh and I've already completed the Witches Wake thing from Bioware.

Thanks

I highly recommend the Dreamcatcher series and Shadowlords series of modules. Very much fun, IMHO.

You can also take a look at http://nwvault.ign.com/.

Many, many modules here, and a hall of fame for their most popular ones.

Yeah, been looking through the vault's Hall of Fame and picked out a couple that looked interesting already. :)

A quick word about SP modules... I've been trying quite a few of these recently, and I have to say you might be disappointed with the quality of them. Example: the award-winner from the NWVault competition was 'Sands of fate: shadows over Heliopolis'. I was expecting great things from this mod, only to find it full of holes and cheesy stuff. More than once, I'd be exploring and find something with a description something like 'this must be the amulet the guard sergeant asked you to find', when I'd never met the NPC - it's just laziness in scripting. Other problems on most of the mods, such as a thesis of a conversation where a line would do, or conversely, cryptic explanations in 'all your base are belong to me' english don't help the atmosphere. Too often, the mod-makers are hell-bent on including the latest script/model/tileset to the detriment of having a well-structured mod.

Just don't expect too much!

I'm not sure if they ever made more then the first one, but the lone wolf series was good. At least, the first module. Its the only single player module I ever acctually finished.

Best SP modules are the paladin trilogy by Rick Burton (though at last check only #s 1 and 2 are out). They kick ass.

I liked the A Call for Heroes series a lot.

3, especially 4 are VERY epic level oriented, and have some fun content. Only flaw I really saw were some repetitive encounters and areas that took too long to finish.

The writing is good, the world Selendi is a homegrown PnP campaign like Avlis is, with a good feel. They've talked about putting up a PW based on it in the past...I hope they do.

There are some fun toys, and choices effect outcome.

What no mention of the Penultima series?
I had a lot of fun with that, although if you're just getting into it,"Penultima rerolled" is much better.I think the author's name is Stephen Geigne.
For all you lovers of evil types, try the Blackguard series. There are two parts out right now( I've only just started on the first one) with a third on the way.
Got'em off of NWV.The first one is Blackguard 1:Dreams of destruction, and then Blackguard 2:The Innocent's Blood.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.
The downside with anything easy (websites, Lego, the NWN toolkit) is that you get the widget-people who just like adding flashy stuff without building on the vital core.

Thanks for all the suggestions. :)

I'll post proper reviews of everything once I've played them, but for now my initial impressions (before playing anything)...

Lone Wolf
I'm a little apprehensive at being forced into a character, but I guess if it's based on an actual series it could be okay.

Paladin Trilogy
Never played as a paladin before, but can't hurt to see what it's like.

A Call for Heros
Sounds like it could be fun.

Penultima series
Hmmm, seems a bit ... something ... dunno. :?

I have suggestion for you actually...

You could as well test the mod I'm making. Chapters 1-3 are about finished(maybe minor bugs) and I would appreciate view from "heavy RP-player" also. I've had about 4-6 peeps testing it and they've liked it very much. Currently it get's you from level 1 to about level 20 in those 3 chapters(4th in the making). PM me if you would like to have a go with it. It is not released in anywhere else, as I want it to be "perfect", before giving it away. I would always appreciate suggestions how it could be better. It's supports all builds, including HoTu & CEP stuff.

The NWN HOTU single player I thought was actually pretty good (I hated NWN and SOU single).

A candle in the dark is pretty good.

There are three "Borderlands" I think modules that are not to bad... I need to look these up though. I quite enjoyed them though they were far too hack and slash for my poor Bard-sorc to live through easily. I had to refight a lot of battles.

The Scrolls of Neverkan was also good excepting it had a pre-srcipted get to 2nd level part that I missed for RP purposes.

There are a lot of good single player modules. But do not expect proffessional quality in a lot of cases. Oh yes there is the Witchblade module...that is realy, realy, realy well done.

Got aCitD, but not tried it yet.

Been playing the Shadowlords one. It's quite well done, but very difficult to solo on... well it was with my 7hp monk... death in 1/2 hits from most enemies. :(
Just got to lvl2 though, so hopefully it'll be a bit easier to stay alive now.

Quickpost

Post by Arrow » Thu Jul 15, 2004 10:05 am

Greetings all, time for my second post.

I've been playing NWN for more than 2 years at RP-servers and everytime I get bored, I'?ll look for confront from sp mods. I've played through more than 30-40mods(and all rogue-based mods) at NWVault and some of them has been good ones.

* Shadowlords campaign - good and because dreamcatcher follows it.
* Dreamcatcher - best mod around
* Honour amongst Thieves - excellent quality and dialogue. many options including good and evil ending.
* My roommate embraces Paladin trilogy everyday to me, haven't test because I hate paladins but I'm sure its awesome .
* Lonewolf - don't know what to tell, good one tho.
* Cormyrean Nights - non-linear great mod with nice cutscenes and awesome plots.
* CC1: Gates of Myth Drannor / CC2: Sorrow of Faerun - classicals and almost the best mods around. I had very fun with this with another player.
* 3rd Edition Adventure Series - The Forge of Fury / The Sunless Citadel - had much fun with this as well, supports very well also multiplay but'll be fun alone as well.

And last but not worst.
*The Aielund Trilogy Act I - Nature Abhors a Vacuum / The Aielund Trilogy Act II - Defender of the Crown - Very nice story and awesome atmosphere. I love the second part more. (non-linear as well)

Thats my list of best sp mods around. I'm sure that you'll like most of them.

The two NWVault Hall of Fame LoTR modules are pretty good. I was surprised...

Shadowlords, then Dreamcatcher, in that order, kept me occupied for many days. ;)

Foreboding in Sylvani was also a good one. Though, I think that are some bugs with it and the latest patches.

http://nwvault.ign.com is a great resource for single player modules.
Good resource for NWN community news as well. I read it several times a day, checking for new information.

Elegia Eternum.

Short.Amazing.Fantastic.A-must-play.
It has great content, an custom intro, custom music and...
VOICE ACTING!
The plot makes totally sense and is very nice.
Not to epic and long like many others.
There is a sequel, but I haven't played yet.

yup. I played both this one and the sequel (I have played allmost all good SP mods before I got to Avlis) and they are the only sp mod with good roleplaying. But, you can't really decide what happens, and your actions, no matter what you do, allways have the same effect.

Aielund is also very good.

I decided to try out 'A Call of Heroes' but noticed that it's not at NWVault anymore. Anyone has it right now so I could get it through email?
