The only healing spell I use frequently is Mass Heal, because there is nothing else useful at 8th level for me. The rest of my lower level slots are jam packed with important stuff, and between my topped out Heal skill and wisdom bonus, I heal more damage than a cure critical wounds spell with a simple +1 healing kit.

spells always, because I am sooo miserly. My cleric does not even own kits. Have a few potions for when I run out of spells. They are called beer. And while andorian ale does not heal you, it sure makes you feel better about dieing.
And... with healing domain, heal is a 5th lvl spell. Also a spell lvl that is very lacking. thus, plenty of slots for heal.

I tend not to use healing kits much. But i prefer to use them out of combat if possible. Seems like a waste of the natural 20 you get out of combat.Malathyre wrote:Thanks for the feedback, everyone, I appreciate it. Out of curiousity, which do you generally prefer to use, if you can use either, healing kits or healing spells? Or is it not even fair to compare the two? Just curious what people's opinions are.
In combat, i always use spells, unless i've ran out.
Even during combat if i had a choice between using a kit or a potion, i'd go the potion, simply because they're quicker to use than kits. I may be wrong about that, but it's from my own observations.
Never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

not unless you have extended 4th lev spells or empowered 3rd levs.WrathOG777 wrote:And... with healing domain, heal is a 5th lvl spell. Also a spell lvl that is very lacking. thus, plenty of slots for heal.

Heh. I prefer healing kits by far.Malathyre wrote:Thanks for the feedback, everyone, I appreciate it. Out of curiousity, which do you generally prefer to use, if you can use either, healing kits or healing spells? Or is it not even fair to compare the two? Just curious what people's opinions are.
I'm not just saying that because Cha'reth's heal check topped out at 105 while mortal, either.

You can't get interrupted using a kit. Using a kit provokes no AoO.
Get a few ranks in Heal and the kits are cheaper by FAR than any potion.

Which you should use depends on a lot of things.
First healing kits are for others, while potions are for you. You should provoke a AoO if you use a kit on yourself, but if you are standing behind the other person you should be safe to use a kit.
Out of combat a kit can make a lot of sense 20+11+3=34 hp auto healed for me with a +3 kit compared to a random (and low value in general) value from a potion (the fact the potion tends to use the minimum level to cast is the problem).
What potion you use is dependant on your HPs of course. Easy way to sort that out is divide your current hp by 3 and compare that to what the potion or spell will heal.
<39 cure light wounds should be ok
40-80 cure moderate wounds will be fine
81-110 cure serious wounds is ok
111-150 cure critical wounds is ok
150+ heal (nothing else is worth bothering with in combat)
You should always have a few of the next higher level potions with you. But the point is you can return yourself to resonable shape from near death in at most 3 potions.
It is also worth noting that when a fighter in a combat situation starts chugging potions they are dead, just being stubborn or trying to live long enough for someone to rescue them.
In combat in general a spell is the best thing, a highly skilled healer can work well too but only a highly skilled one as otherwise d20+3+11 is not realy as good as 3d8+15 or (3d8+15)*1.5 especialy since the die roll is likely to be more constant then a d20.
But fundamentally I view healing kits as something I carry to use on other people.

You do not provoke a AoO using a kit on your self, and anyone with a good heal skill they are far better to use than a cure critical potion in combat. Frequently the AoO provoked by drink this potion usually means you end up losing more Hp than you gain.Spell Singer wrote:First healing kits are for others, while potions are for you.
