The key is being miserly and gold savvy!szabot wrote:My main (who is four and half years old) gained his gold in many ways:
1. Careful shopping at merchants
2. Hoarding goods in inns to sell later at prices better than biomerchants
3. Selling/auctioning a few high-priced items
4. Almost completely avoided using consumables
5. Some crafting
6. Picking up everything
7. Eventually, owning/running a shop
Getting to 7 took a lot of time and gold in the first place, but once it took off it really became a money-maker. I had a lot of stock for it immediately, too, because I'd been hoarding merchandise for years, keeping it in inns. Whenever I found something on a biomerchant that was uncommon, I'd buy it and save it to sell later. I loathed purchasing consumables with him, too, and would avoid using them whenever I could. Ones that were more important to have around, like healing kits, he made himself.
About 6: I'd pick up every drop, even if it was just 30 gold here and there. I was always shocked when people would just walk right by the remains of things they killed! Trails of riches were left in their wake. Combined with a refusal to spend gold on consumables and gold-sinks, over time this adds up.
Including the value of his shop, he is now worth quite a lot in gold.
All my alts, though, pretty much never have more than about 150k: I don't play them enough to make it worthwhile to keep inn rooms, so I don't hoard items with them; I use consumables with them; I don't craft with them at all; and none of them have gained any items that they could sell/auction for a large amount.
How much gold do you have?

My old main has lots of gold! Over 4million in cash, lodge, merchant, 10million+ in personal gear.
All of that came from drops, trades, and a nice cash donation from the OoG.
Hopefully all of it will be out of the system for good soon. Hopefully.
I think the glut of auctions is great - the more stuff for sale, the better chance lowbies have of buying some half-decent stuff.

You'd like to think so, but the current auctions are beginning to prove otherwiseI think the glut of auctions is great - the more stuff for sale, the better chance lowbies have of buying some half-decent stuff

My main rarely has more than 300k, but runs an orphanage and used to be part of an Order where supplies ate a lot of gold.
Others vary depending on how many consumables they have to use on outings...
<Pleth> is that aris elf??
Re: How much gold do you have?
hehe, every gold piece my main has was gained by picking it up off the ground and cleaning the blood off it. He tends not to make any gold since he doesn't craft and donates everything to his Order. For a char as old as him, he's pretty poor actually

Never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

Janur was quite rich at some point, although he sank a lot of these millions into Medec. But he purely gained this gold from roleplaying. Not owning a shop in the sense you all talk about, not looting, not crafting - He created a demand for things out of thin air that he could fill with things that didn't cost him a single gold piece. Besides, he has a knack for leeching off from rich friends and groups.
These days he's well below the half-a-million point, although his items and in-game properties are probably worth a few.

Silver's had a few hundred thousand to her name for most of her existence, although the exact amount fluctuates wildly. Acquired through adventuring or, with Midnight, convincing people to pay us for adventuring. She's certainly never wanted for money, but her expenses - weapons and gear, a house, and especially potions - have prevented her from ever getting too rich.

Huh? This is why I stopped participating in auctions. I find something that my PC could really use, make a bid on it and follow the bidding war for a few days... eventually someone comes in and triples the last price, taking the item out of reach of most that were bidding.horatio wrote: I think the glut of auctions is great - the more stuff for sale, the better chance lowbies have of buying some half-decent stuff.
When I start walking around with 30k gp I feel pretty rich. Its taken quite a bit of time and effort to scrape that together. So when the bidding for the Leather Armor goes from 25k to 27k... 29k... 32k... and then to 100k in a single bid? I sigh and walk away.
Again, your mileage may vary,
