protections, etc...

Post by Jaybob » Fri Dec 21, 2007 6:02 pm

can someone tell me the meaning of the numbers/ dashes in this?

(10/- Slashing)

it protects against slashing, that's easy, but what do the numbers really mean? if you gather 100 protection points against say, slashing, are you immune to slashing?

the first 10 points of damage from a slashing weapon will be absorbed by the item.

10/-

Means that it will protect you from the first 10 points of slashing damage from each hit.
What is listed after the / tells you what will penetrate that protection.
so /- means that there is nothing that will penetrate it.
If it were 10/+3 then a +3 or better weapon would ignore the protection and do you full damage.

the same type of protection does not stack, so you cannot 'gather' 100 points. If you have 3 items with 10/- slashing, it will still only stop 10 points per hit.

Damage resistance and damage reduction (easily confused) will stack.
So you might for instance have 10/- slashing and 5/+2 soak
This would stop 15 points from a normal or +1 weapon but only 10 from a +2 slashing weapon.

10/+1 slashing means that 10 points of slashing will be absorbed -- unless a +1 weapon or better is used.

10/+3 piercing means that 10 points of piercing will be absorbed -- unless a +3 weapon or better is used.

10/- bludgeoning means that 10 points of bludgeoning damage will be absorbed, regardless of how mundane or enchanted the weapon is.

Note that the first two examples are damage reduction; the third is damage resistance. Reduction and resistance stack.

While we're at it, two clarifications about Damage Immunity:

1) Does Immunity absorb damage before Reduction and Resistance?
2) If I remember correctly, Immunities DO stack. Can someone verify?

The order of operations is immunity->resistance->reduction. Immunity stacks with resistance and reduction this way, but I can't remember if it stacks with itself. Anyone?
