New GUI available -->transparent menus, colorful icons

Post by chamalscuro » Sun Jul 29, 2007 9:17 pm

Just released in the NWN Vault. Wow!!

I've used their colored spell & feat icons for some time now.

Well, now their GUI has all that and a lot more. The transparent icons and menus are a godsend.

Just download the zip or rar file and extract the files into your override folder.

I've used the spell icons. Took a little getting used to, but now I'd never go back. I just put this new GUI stuff in. It changes a LOT. Will also take some getting used to, but may be worth it. People who don't like change won't like it, I'd think. I think alterations like these help to freshen up the look of the game for me on occasion, and I like that.

Saw that. Havaen't tried yet, but does look pretty neat.Reminds me a bit of all the custom screens from Myth Drannor.

That page is in the NWN2 vault. Does this work on both NWN1 and 2?

Sounds cool !

The NWN1/NWN2 vaults are actually one and the same so you need to be a bit careful with what you toss in :P

This particular package is for NWN1 though and I like it with a few exceptions such as for example that overly ugly Examine icon.

Yeah, I'm definitely lovin' the transparent Character & Inventory menus, and all the other transparent stuff. Keeps your eyeballs on the game.

yep, ditto! Examine icon is really ugly. but all in all it's a nice thing, changing the routine...
first time I lay my eyes upon the new GUI, I felt like on an acid trip, with all the colors and transparency... just the swirling was not there..and the ants...the ants!!

I recommend it!

Only thing I don't like so far are the transparent menus when you load up the game, create new characters, and so on. It's nice during the game, but it just makes things more difficult when you're not actually playing.

Btw, I checked out the creator's PW. Unfortunately, it's an action world rather than a rp world.

It's quite nice. I'm really enjoying it.

If you're really adventerous, I'm thinking it couldn't be too hard to dig through the override until you found those exact menu overlays and delete them.

I'm sort of tempted to do it myself, but I'll most likely get used to it after a bit.

The examine button's red eye cracks me up to no end however, a very realistic icon of the sleepgriefed.

Love the transparent stuff. :D

Hate the neon colored icons. :?

Guess I have to fidget a bit with it to make it suit my tastes.

Btw, for the first time my laptop froze while playing NWN so I had to reset it. I hope this is not connected to the new GUI.

+2

I've installed it on both my wife's and my PC.

Great stuff.

Now all we need to do is convince the dude that made it to do the CoPaP spell pack icons to match... heh

I'm not sold on it yet, but willing to give it a further chance.
Apart from what Szabot already said, I am really disliking the purple/pink theme, must their PW theme or such. Especially the loading bar freaks me out. Most icons that have more then 1 colour in them look kinda halfbaked and crude, like it could have done better and with more care, but maybe this is just the best you can make of it.

If anyone has made some nice edits upon this, I would gladly hear them!

What I like best are the spell icons at the top of your screen once they are cast, and when you try to emote via the Radial Menu you see TEXT for each emote! That's just great.

Tried this out for the first time today. I love it! Easier to see the icons for me.

I"m loving it so far, haven't had a chance to get into any combat and see what effect (ie how much it screws me up and kills me) it has on it yet. As for the purple :) it's my favorite color so this GUI is just perfect for me. Shame it didn't carry over into the game more ;) .

Excluding those menu options when starting the game, overall it's a hit. For those of us that use shortcuts to connect directly to a particular server, the menu's won't be much of an issue anyway.

Ewwww... just noticed that it adds a plug for his PW as one of the intro movies! Time to disable those bastards...

Finding the right menu box pictures to delete takes a bit of guess work with file names, since there are quite a few to delete that look the same, but trial and error are the easiest way.

What to delete for other things people mentioned they'd rather not have (myself and a few folks in IRC)...
Get rid of the "world of whatsits" pre-load screen and use the original one: delete load_legal.tga and load_legal2.tga
*New edit* Avlis_Splash.rar if you want load_legal.jpg as your game loadscreen. Made by Belasco long ago for the hak installer, but never made it in.
Get rid of that bright yellow "move to" icon in the top left and use the standard one: delete ir_moveto.tga

These 2 go together...
Get rid of the yellow SoU logo and use the original purple one (sounds a bit backwards considering everything else is purple in this theme): delete gui_xp1_logo.tga
Get rid of the redone NWN splash screen with the info about the "world of whatsits": delete gui_pre_bknd1.tga and gui_pre_bknd2.tga
*I believe in credit where credit is due, but it is fugly and I don't care about the "world of whatsits"

You can do all sorts of fun changes by editing the tga's. Most are pretty straight forward, but if you want to mess with the transparent stuff, you need to learn how alpha channels work. For example, I didn't like the health bar, or the bright blue line for it. Editing the background was easy. It is the pnl_party_bar.tga. The blue colored status is a bit harder, since it is one of the lines in gui_boxes_ingame.tga (just replace the blue with another color). By editing the alpha channel, I was also able to make the sides of the line semi-transparent, so the colors behind showed through a bit. Ended up with this.
Image
*edits* Health_bar.7z if you want the files for that.
And yes I like editing stuff :)

There are intro movies?

Wow... I been using the direct connect options WAY too long. LOL

I love that stuff, but it was a bit too much Neon-Flashy for me.
What I did ?
I deleted all the files from the hak folder, except the ones beginning
with "gui_ .....".
Now it rocks.

:D

I had forgotten about them, too, until I reinstalled the game recently and forgot to disable them in my ini file. Credit where credit is due, sure, but come on... there's like 5 different animations to get through! It's just too much.
