Appropriate Deity for non-evil rogues?

Post by Fifty » Tue May 27, 2003 1:06 pm

This is related to another thread I started in the general NWN forum, but now my question has become a bit more specific so I thought I would ask here...

A character I want to start is a female halfling cleric. I see her though as a priest of thieves/rogues etc...

I don't see her as an evil character, more as someone who just doesn't live by the rules, neutral rather than good.

Verossa and Angadar seem wrong...

Vorin seems like a possibility... Maybe more of a rogue/fence/fixer than an active thief? Still not quite right though...

Forian seems a little bit too random but is a possibility

Berryn is the halfling god, but seems to have little affinity with rogues from what I have read and Jordicus agreed...

He also suggested Dra'nar or Dru'el... I've read up and they seem appropriate if nothing else crops up...

I am completely new to Avlis so I need advice on questions involving deities, as it is the sort of thing you can't correct too easily once you start playing...

just so it helps a little, here is my basic formulation about Berryn and her clerics...
Since Berryn is NG, her basic philosophy would be the same as O'ma: serving the Greater Good

As the Daughter of Gorethar, there would be a respect for Gorethar and his followers and philosophies (LG) as well.

Since her main focuses are Morning & Spring, the underlying theme of Berryn would be Renewal & Beginings (this would correspond to the comments from the Cleric stationed at the shrine of Berryn in Le'or as well.)

As a creator, Berryn allowed her halflings to choose their own path so there is no restrictions to alignment. A Cleric of Berryn would have to be a Good alignment, but not necessarily a NG. That would be the majority of the clergy of Berryn but there would be a smattering of LG and CG as well, correlating with the variety of the populace of Ferrel. The NG clergy would tend to stay in their respective locations (the halfling comfort zone theory) while the CG would roam and the LG would be the religious lawkeepers/militants
Now, this was from me, because I made the first Cleric of Berryn, so I posted this in the cleric forum to clarify if i had a good basis for character development. It was given the thumbs up, but that doesn't mean it is the only way a Cleric of Berryn could operate. :)

Of course having enough time to play my cleric in the midst of all the other things I am doing is the greater challenge.. :?

I would go with Berryn, I think :D

Sounds like CN?

Dru'El would not make too much sense with Elves and Nature as prime foci.

I would take Vorin with a chaotic twist. Clerics can vary a bit from their god's alignment, but not too much. With a rogue as multi-class it seems like the best choice.

I'm sure I don't need to say this, but I will anyway: pick some appropriate clerical domains.
So much fun,
yet so little time to enjoy it.

@Nighthawk...

Even though Berryn is the goddess of the halflings, I really think that a priest of rogues would be in conflict with Berryns basic tenants of Renewal and Beginings. If we were talking about a halfling rogue, thats one thing, even though remember that the adventuring halfling who leaves Ferrell is not the norm. The typical halfling is one who wants to be comfortable in the pleasantness of his own home.

And remember, a cleric of Berryn would have to be Good, either CG, NG or LG.

Forian could certainly work, albeit with a very very chaotic bent.
Since thievery is purely chaotic (not good or evil per se in Avlis), this might be the most appropriate god overall.

Dru'El has no problem with thievery (:)), but his clerics are good-aligned, so it's thievery for a good cause. If you just like stealing for its own sake, that sounds more like Forian than anyone else I can think of.

This is from the Clerics board:
To know Forian's will, one must simply act in the NOW, without regard to past or future. If it feels good, hey, why not do it? If you don't want to do it, then don't. If you hate something, deal with it right then. If you like something, show it. Want to help someone? Go ahead. Only care about yourself? That's fine too.
Best of all, there are no clerics of Forian in Avlis right now, that I know of anyhow.

Jordicus, I see your point.

However, I suggest that if the character is Chaotic (i.e. rebellious) enough to want to leave home and travel, then he or she could be CG. This applies especially, if we assume that Halflings are usually Rogues (does that actually apply here on Avlis?), then he or she may be 'Good' enough for this to be the reason for the rebellion and for leaving home.

This would then constitute a 'Renewal and Beginning', as the character would be starting a new life, away from Ferrell.

All you need to add is that the character has 'found God' and you have the basis for a CG Cleric of Berryn.

My halfling is not a Cleric, although she does follow Berryn, for a reason very similar to the above. She is a Scout, wanting to go out and explore and see the world.

not all halflings on Avlis are rogues... even though the other classes are fare fewer. My Diego is a cleric. Jenny and at least 2 or 3 others are bards. I think that there is at least 1 or 2 druids. And Sugriam is a sorcerer, but I don't know of any others are magic users. As for mixed classes, there are probably lots, but I was just counting halflings off the top of my head..

Other than that, almost all halflings that I know are rogues... or at least primarily a rogue.. Stereotypical... (Me included... )

If you think that stereotype is overused, think about this... Other than Diego (not sure if you ever met him yet) have you ever met any halflings that use the large body type (heavyset)? They are all these scrawny thin things.... I think its funny how many times Diego was first mistaken for a small dwarf... :D

I've seen a halfling running around wielding a bastard sword two-handed lately... keep an eye out for him.

Halflings perfered class should realy commoner.
From that reasoning, commoner should be the preferred class for every race. :)
