The Nation of Jechran

Post by izyk » Wed Apr 23, 2003 7:27 pm

Whose a happy monk? Who? Zachar is a happy monk. :D

Thanks for the Jechran posting Orleron. Dre'Ana is obviously a bigger influence then I have played it. Though I had begun to suspect that as soon as I read the world information for Dre'Ana.

Specifically the thrust of my questions are to do with how debased the men are likely to be - which isnt suprising considering I play one.
(sorry  )

1. Relative to Mikona and Elysia, I visualize Myleah as a smaller community, less city, more pastoral. Closer in feel to Elysia than Mikona. Would that be accurate?

2. You mentioned this :
.. the tribe will often take the baby and seek to trade it to another tribe who happens to be low on males at the moment.
Does this trade extend beyond babies? Are adult males considered mobile assets belonging to the tribe, or are they viewed as members, (subservient to women) in thier own right. A analog might be the rights of slaves vs pre-suffrage women in North America.

The banished into the wilderness aspect seems to indicate a rather callous attitude towards the men.

3. Another quote :
Women who are intent on having a child will choose a male of their liking and procreate.
It would be natural to assume that the men compete for that regard in some fashion....but that assumption is based on the idea that heterosexual relationships with men are not seen as a distatesful necessity.

In other, coarser terms, is the island of lesbian pixies located within the borders of Jechren.

4. It doesn't sound like Jechran has any specific enemies or hatreds as a nation, aside from a taste of the survivalist 'us against them' mentality natural in an isolated and distinct culture. Obviously the geography would make Galdos a major trading partner, but how a severe a barrier is the wasteland to commerce and communications with Drotid.

Thats all I have, sorry for the detail questions..I know you hate em, just trying to figure out one of the more unique societies in Avlis :->

I to have many questions about this but more from the Dre'Ana aspect of things.

It soulnds to me like Dre'Ana has established a very one sided mindset in jechran. How woul dthis affect her churches such as in Elysia?.

Would her followers also have the same female superiority attitude or would it avry from city to city?

The main reason I am asking is I really do need to know this for ideas on how the maidens should be organised and such. They alreay are a sort of loose family like a tribe but would thier attitudes be different?

Should Followers of Dre'Ana be more feminist in thier actions or mannerisms?

hehe... I don't hate questions. I just don't like getting 10 million PM's that I can't possibly answer in my lifetime. lol

1. Picture Myleah like you would picture the Inca or Aztec capitols, but female dominated. Big cities, with decent technology, but still primitive in many respects and largely dependent on the surrounding pastoral community.

2. Adult males are occasinally traded, yes. But this is done more for diversity and to stave off boredom rather than actually using the men to obtain material wealth. Males are communal tribal property. No one woman owns them, so they can only be traded when you are buying something for the entire tribe.

3. Male procreation is not seen as distasteful, but it is a necessity. The attitude of the nation is that males are kept down for the good of everyone. They are not evil or horrible, but the tribe just does what it must to survive. If there's too many men, it can be a threat to EVERYONE in the tribe, even the kept males. So they must be gotten rid of somehow, and if at all possible they must be gotten rid of without directly slaughtering them. This is a neutral good society, keep in mind. Read the entry under neutral good alignments on the info board.

Females are the final one who chooses who they procreate with. The males can compete all they like, but it probably does not have much to do with who wants them.

I'm sure you can figure out what a bunch of women in a society would do if there were limited males in the tribe who were only used for procreation and not pleasure.
I don't need to go into that. I was thinking of contracting Ann Rice though. lol But yeah, let's not turn this into a huge lesbo emphasis, ok? I'm trying to build a balanced world here, not a porn site.

4. The Wastelands are almost impenetrable. They have been since the orcish mages tried to unleash their evocation spell that ended the Great War. You COULD get through there, but not with any regularity unless you had a LOT of protective magic.... and that's if you were able to avoid the magic dead areas. Galdos does trade them things, but remember Galdos is very reclusive also. Their trade is far from regular.

Jechran is very isolated which is why they are able to stay the way they are. Their biggest enemies are the dangers of nature and the disagreements betweent he tribes that usually flare up every month or so. But as far as outside influences, many of them have never met anyone from outside of Jechran.

The people of Jechran developed in the way they did because they needed to do it to survive. Dre'Ana knew that and took it upon herself to organize them. This does NOT meant that Dre'Ana believes that women everywhere on Avlis should act like the people in Jechran. My advice to you would be to continue portraying Dre'Ana's followers the way you are. Outside of Jechran, Dre'ana is a women's patron goddess who deals with oppression, not the active suppression of anyone. Her worship is very different in Elysia than it is in Jechran.

Ah, I think you misunderstood...no I worded the question badly. Think the display of feathers on a peacock or beauty pageant when I say compete, not manly death battles for the hand of a maiden.

I worded by question badly, but in retrospect, it wasnt necessary.

Agreed. I asked the question to get a clue about the attitude rather than as a soft porn kick. I play Zachar as a concubine, one who is well trained as a dancer and as a lover. I play these like they were his vocations.

That angle changes if the 'procreation is just a thing you gotta do' attitude is prevelant. It becomes a little less personal, and a lot more institutional. I expected that might happen so it is not a suprise, and I was careful not to RP myself into a corner.

edit : The real point of the question was intended to find out if Jechren used birth control to control population, or if it want really required...

Thanks for the detailed reply...it helped a lot.

Just a thought.

The Wastelands are inpenetrable due to the magic spells used there during the war - I am thinking this would be similar to a Real Life post-Nuclear Warzone?

Galdos is mountainous, which makes Jechran lush and rainy, but also makes for very difficult passage - unless there are passes and valleys. Here, I am thinking of the Himalayas or maybe the Andes - very difficult to cross.

However, to the east of Jechran is the Great Sea. This also adjoins eastern T'Nanshi and eastern M'Chek.

Could ships reach Jechran? Is the Sea stormy or with treacherous currents?

Mainly, I am thinking for the future - when Jechran is built. There has to be some way to reach it then. Also, there are a number of characters who either come from there (like Falcon of Jechran) or have visited there (like Misty Moonbow). So how did they travel between Jechran and Elysia, or vice versa?

I am guessing that nobody in their right mind goes through the Wastelands and the mountains are very difficult to get through. That leaves only the Sea or a link between northeast Deglos and southeast Jechran - the map suggests they adjoin at the corner.

Any comments please Orleron?
Life is never as bad as you think it is, although that doesn't help at the time.

Yes, you can get there through the sea. But it's sort of like trying to trade with a bunch of native americans in the middle of Brazil.

You can go there. And they do have resources for trade. But they are so strange and backward, and warlike, in some cases, that the trip becomes unprofitable. Small traderoutes carried out by really brave merchants do exist, though the nation of Jechran itself is too fragmented to present as any kind of national entity having diplomatic contacts.
