Clerical Alignment - Kelvos

Post by lummoxybez » Sun Nov 27, 2005 10:42 pm

Hi,
I'm thinking of starting a new character as a female cleric of Kelvos based in Mikona. I've just read the rules regarding clericl alignment posted by Oleron, and about how important it is to stick to the alignment of the deity in question.

I'm cool with this rule, even though I'm not a fan of alignment in general (I believe a good role-player shouldn't need such guidelines to stick to), but it's not my world, so fair play to Oleron.

However, looking at the description of Kelvos and the duties of his priests, I noticed the following,
"The duties of the clerics are simple? Gather more followers, match make, as well as help anyone who seems to be in a hopeless situation."
If I go around match-making and helping star-crossed lovers, wouldn't that make me 'good'?
By the definition of helping people, I would assume so, and yet if I actually become good (from neutral evil), I will lose my clerical powers.
I'm a bit confused as to how I should be playing a priestess of Kelvos, so if anyone has any ideas I'd be glad to hear them.

Initially, I was excited about playing a bitter and twisted woman who is very cynical about relationships and won't lift a finger to help any lovers in need, but this seems to be the complete opposite of Kelvor's credo.

This isn't a gripe, but a genuine call for assistance in role-playing.

Please help.

Nothin' says you have to make good, successful matches.

Think Romeo and Juliet - not a happy ending. They're Star Crossed Lovers. Happy marriages are not Star Crossed. And I think it's a wonderful sort of evil that sets up relationships that are doomed to fail and give them all sorts of false hopes about how they're perfect for each other.

I don't know if the hopeless situation is necessarily refering to the Star Crossed Lovers, or if it is, if the help is necessarily suppossed to be beneficial. This is just my take on the fact that it's an evil alignment.

My $0.02, can I have my change now?

Thanks for the $0.02 TiVO.
It was the whole aspect pf 'helping someone' that bothered me from an evil point of view.

Much can be read into the phrase, 'Helping people' I guess, including being amused and pleased by the emotional torment of others. "If Kelvos suffered his fate, then why not you fool?"

In the case of this deity though, I can understand that Kelvos himself would be evil - given his bitterness and anguish, but surely his priests should be helpful and good to try and make amends.

I'm perfectly happy to play the twisted-bitch though.
Roll on character creation tomorrow.....

Actually this is incorrect.

The reason that Kelvos wants his followers to match-make and do helpful deeds is because he believes that Lesa would be pleased by his actions.

He's evil mostly because of his tendency to be extremely jealous, his clergy for example would probably go out of their way to break up a couple that spurns Kelvos and disrespects his mantle.

He is as much a god of jealousy as he is one of hopeless dreams, the conflict between his envy and his desire to please Lesa is what makes his character so odd, and his clerical alignment conflicting.

Bear in mind however, that the majority of his clergy are made up of spinsters who've had really awful luck with love, they're cynical, and usually a bit bitter, but work to make sure that the hopeless get their loves, while the more superficial or philanderers get what they deserve.

Quotes :

"You must suffer this emotional anguish so that the eternal torment of my Lord Kelvos is diminished."

"Love is just an illusion, but pain is very real."

"I curse your soul to suffer the loneliness and grief that you deserve."

"Friends and lovers will all leave me, but I will always be here."

"I spit on your so called friendships, and laugh at your petty attempts at relationships."

I'm playing a priestess of Kelvos in Elysia. As per the rules I'm Neutral Evil, although anyone who meets me would probably not guess it. I try to be a responsible and helpful member of the clergy, caring for the spiritual well-being of my flock like all clerics should.
However, although I should be helping people get together and blessing marriages and such, these are not evil acts.
I feel as though I should be whipping a few farmers to make up for it...

Should I ask people for donations to the temple and curse them when they refuse to donate or something?

Also, what is 'kaytza aym'awl kama'?
