Guardians of the forest?

hello all

An elf I play has been criticised at least twice in the game recently for laying claim to T'Nanshi forest as if it is owned by the elves. He has also met lots of characters who are apparently 'neutral' in the war that seem to think that means they should be able to move about freely in TNanshi as if no war is happening. I must be confused about something somewhere along the lines, but here are extracts from Orl's writings that led to me thinking otherwise. I play my elf such that an elf's status in the forest is different to other races, particularly humans.

"Le'Or T'Nanshi is the capitol of the elven nation of T'Nanshi proper...

Name Derivation: Translated from Avlissian elven, Le' (the) Or (Light) (of) T' (Land of) Nanshi (The Elves, The Elven People)...

Entrance District:
This district centers around a group of trees connected to a couple of winches that control lifts used to get into the city. It is usually heavily guarded, and all non-elven visitors are noted...

Garrison District:
This is a military base. In fact, it is the central military base for entire elven army...

The elven nation of T'Nanshi's roots lie all the way back in the creation on Avlis...

The name T'Nanshi is translated loosely as "Spirit Land".

Over time, the word for spirit came to be the same as the word for elf. Thus, T'Nanshi is now derived from the phrase "Land of the Elves"...

M'Chek is the southernmost nation on the continent, and they are cornered into their niche by the elven nation of T'Nanshi."

So please, tell me, what am I missing? While I think 'ownership' is a very modern word and prefer to think elves alive today are more like guardians and protectors, other races in T'Nanshi are surely guests, in a way that elves are not.
