Btw, this is the site I use to derive elven words:
http://milon.morfix.co.il/Default.aspx
I usually type a word in, and then bastardize it to the elven sound and grammar. Problem is you need to be able to read the website, which most people cannot, though a few people here probably can quite easily.

Well, alas, I am unable to read that site and was looking for a few pointers for a PC. I know Oovu is father but what would it be for a Grandfather?
Also what about formal titles like Sir/Lady. I was looking for a word to use when talking to someone you show respect to.
"Greetings friend" is "Pelail hoovaire" but
"Greetings Sir" would then be "Pelail ?????"

Re: Nanshilae words.
*Dusts off thread.*
Okay, since this seems to be a fairly common word that needs translating: "Archer"
In nanshilae the word for bow is Keeshen.
Archer will be "keeshot". (Yes, yes, derived from "kashat" or "bowman" in hebrew.)

Re: Nanshilae words.
Anyone got a website that helps in translating for new words? I've poked around a few times and can only find Hebrew which I don't understand well. Keep trying to find phonetic Hebrew (written in English) but no luck yet.

Re: Nanshilae words.
Well let's see, the hebrew root words are sheker (lie) and shakran (liar)
sakharas (to lie), sakhar (a lie) and a sakhrin (liar) plural sahkrinen(liars).
Objections? Problems?

Re: Nanshilae words.
Nothing odd about it...but yeah.
sheloom for peace I think fits well with our standard practice. (from lit. "peace" -> "shalom")
A hebrew speaker can correct me on the second one...
I've gotten multiple returns on "yearning", but I think tshuka (seems to be used in a religious context) works best as a nanshile word.
tsookas for 'to yearn'
Other rules for transforming the word apply.
Some bonuses?
retsahk - "murder" ("to murder" retsahkas, 'murders' retsahken, etc. etc.)
ruutsahk - "murderer" ("murderers" as rootsahken)
As usual, YMMV on the usefulness of these words.

Re: Nanshilae words.
If retsahk is the verb stem, wouldn't retsahkith be the noun? Or did you mean "murder" as a verb, as in "I murder him" ("Eni retsahk loe")retsahk - "murder" ("to murder" retsahkas, 'murders' retsahken, etc. etc.)
ruutsahk - "murderer" ("murderers" as rootsahken)

Re: Nanshilae words.
I just noticed there is no word for "is."
Is, "is" an implied word, like the "-ing" ending to some words (sing, singing..Hope, Hoping)?

Re: Nanshilae words.
Is is a form of the verb "to be". It's implied in any subject-adjective construction where there's no verb specified.
Example: Lah riavya is literally "She hungry". The irregular verb form "to be" is implied, so it's heard and translated as "She is hungry". Note that this verb form always assumes the present tense... so you can't say "she was hungry". It's a peculiarity of Nanshilae. If you want to talk about being hungry at some other time than right now, you need to specify: Yoom'ooharan lah riavya is literally "Last day she is hungry", or "She was hungry yesterday" when converted to comprehensible common (English). Unfortunately we don't have a lot of time-specific verb forms of "to be" yet... nothing for was, were, or will be. We can imply those to some extent, but it gets dicey very quickly. Nanshilae is a language of the present tense, and speaking of the past or the future is inherently challenging.
Look here for the grammatical rules on "to be": http://wiki.avlis.org/Nanshilae#The_verb_.22to_be.22.

The closest in English would probably be kbr (pronounced kay-bear), so for Nashi, maybe kayvaah or kayvaar?

Re: Nanshilae words.
There is verb conjugation in Hebrew, based on tense as well as gender and plurality. However, that conjugation is a quite a bit more complicated and probably didn't make the port over to Nanshilae, simply because it's a fantasy language. But it's possible to make do with what's given. For past tense you could use what's on the wiki under "Present Perfect" tense (the translations are along the lines of "I guarded" when they should be "I have guarded", though they line up with past tense Hebrew conjugations, so I think past tense is implied here... the original authors or Hebrew-knowers can feel free to correct me!) Likewise, use "future imperfect" conjugations for future tense.spool32 wrote:Is is a form of the verb "to be". It's implied in any subject-adjective construction where there's no verb specified.
