I had a similar issue and thought it was Vista , but it turned out to be a bad HAK, downloading them and replacing solved the crash / hanging.

Thanks Guys this is sorted , replaced all the haks from the good machine to the corrupt one and I can now game on the laptop without crashing every feww minutes , and also found some interesting swag in the bag

Have you emptied out the bag while in XP mode, then tried opening it again using the laptop? It might not be the bag, but whatever you carry in it. Generally with gaming its all in the card ...I never skimp on that piece of kit otherwise you only regret it.
