Hurricane Irma

PostAuthor: Xaila » Fri Sep 08, 2017 2:50 pm

Floridian players - I hope everyone is hanging in there and doing what they need to do to prepare for this storm. I follow tropical weather stuff really closely and Irma is a record smasher. No matter how you slice it, things are looking bad for Florida right now.

It was mentioned in IRC/Discord but I thought it might be a good idea to mention it here that you may not want to leave characters on Arkaz right now. AFAIK the Arkaz servers are still privately hosted by Terry and located in Florida. I can't remember where exactly in the state, but basically the entire peninsula is at risk right now. Power outages extremely likely.

Avlis servers are professionally hosted, but I know the data center is in West Palm Beach. I'm sure it's built to withstand a lot and has generators, but this storm is really off the charts. Not sure if there might be a risk of interruption of service should the power fail or hardware fail even if there's offsite backups. That one's probably a better question for krackq.

Stay safe everyone.

We do backup data for immediate issues and I'm making some backups offsite for some of the main and important stuff just in case. Hopefully it will diminish before it causes a problem for anyone. Stay safe!!

Arkaz advises moving characters off of Arkaz:

struldbruggian wrote:The monster of a hurricane is imminently approaching us here in Florida, and widespread power outages are likely which may be for an extended period of time. Since the Arkaz servers are also in Florida, it would be prudent for any characters currently on Arkaz to take shelter offworld, I hear Hala/Ysgard is particularly lovely this time of year!

Although we are not in a designated evacuation zone, we're only about 15 miles inland of the mid east coast of FL..., so Zandel and I will be erring on the side of caution and taking a little excursion up to mid Georgia for a few days.

All our thoughts and prayers will be with all who are staying to brave the storm, and with those who have already had a hefty dose of mother nature's finest fury already. Please stay safe, take care, and check in when you are able!

Update from Terry re: Arkaz

terryrayc wrote:Current track has the eye wall passing near us here in Polk County Florida.

There is probably no chance of us not losing power and internet so expect outages.

Data is protected and backed up so we are fine there.

I'll post when things have passed and give an update.
