Introducing CHAT, a new in-game messaging system

PostAuthor: Seka » Fri Mar 10, 2017 2:06 am

Today Avlis rolled out a new chat system for cross-server private messaging. It's kind of like the 'tell' command but on steroids. Here’s how it works:

Code: Select all
/chat [player] [message]

Sends message to player (on any server). You don't need to spell out the player’s full name: any uniquely identifiable substring will work. So:

Code: Select all
/chat tor hello

… will send “hello” to Tor Varson. (Go on and try that, I know he'd love to hear from you!)

To reply to the last person who sent you a chat message, you can use the /reply command:

Code: Select all
/reply [message]

Note that you do not need to supply a player name when replying, which saves you a bit of typing.

There are also aliases (shortcuts) for the chat and reply commands: /c and /r. So you can do the following:

Code: Select all
/c pleth can I get a jump?

… and Plethora can respond:

Code: Select all
/r sure!

Also included is a history command (/history, or the shortcut /h) that displays all messages you’ve recently sent and received. Like the LFP system, chat uses the combat log to display messages, so the history command is useful when you suspect you've missed a chat in a torrent of combat messages. By default, the history command displays up to 25 of your most recent messages, but you can limit (or increase) the output by adding a number. For example:

Code: Select all
/h 10

… displays only the 10 most recent chat messages.

The history command can also be used with the LFP channel, so you can see recent LFP posts like this:

Code: Select all
/h lfp

.. which is useful if you just logged in and want to know if anyone was recently looking for a party.

Finally, the /ignore commands that are part of LFP also work with the chat system. Players are not informed if you're ignoring them, so don't worry about offending anyone.

Note that history is periodically purged (every 8 hours or so), so don't be alarmed if you don't see every message you've ever been sent.

For complete in-game help with chat, type: /help chat

Hope you enjoy it! Please let me know if you encounter any bugs, quirks, issues, annoyances, or have feature requests. Huge thanks to SF2, Tizmo, Gorgon & Grunt for helping to test it, and of course, endless thanks to our tireless Queen of QA, Hamlet, and the Server God, krackq.
