Question about Portraits folder

I accidentally expanded a .rar of non-portrait graphic files into my portraits folder. Now whenever I create a new character, the load time in the the choose-a-portrait phase is astronomical.
Is it ok to just wipe the folder clean, then download the big portrait pack and start over? If so, which download should I use to re-install all the BioWare portraits plus the CEP& Avlis custom ones?
How should I go about cleaning this up?

If you know the date that you installed the offending material you can sort the folder by date then delete anything that is from the wrong .RAR. Nice thing about expnding a RAR is that it will all have the same date created.
Oh, make sure you sort by date created not date modified, as date created should show you when the archive was extracted.
Hope that helps

Portraits are not showing (only generic bald headed dude is there) IG. I dumped the portrait folder and DL'd anew...no change... Any ideas?

Hello? Anybody out there? I've asked my question on two different forums over a couple of days, and not a soul has offered so much as a ...'your SOL'. Am I on the do not reply list or something?

Don't know what to say about which portraits to download. I'd say start here...
http://wiki.avlis.org/CustomPortrait
But yes, you should be able to wipe the portraits folder clean with no adverse effect other than not being able to use or see those portraits IG.
Is the generic bald dude the only portrait available when creating a new character?? Or is it just that the custom portrait you used for your own characters is gone?

I downloaded portrait 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.1 and 5.2.
The big one (think it's called portraits) has portrait1, 2, 3, and 4 all in one.
I find with all those in there the portrait screen for options does take a long time to load.
What I wish I could do is split the male from the female so only the appropriate ones would be optional, but don't know how to discern the male from female to split them up.

If the chest doesn't give it away, look a little lower. Here's a guide:

Hey Jo'd,
I've never had the issue of no portraits loading. Have you checked the silly things like that the Portraits directory is spelled right (e.g. "Portraits" vs "potraits"). It may sound silly but I had an issue like that with a different game a while back. Other than that, the NWN Client should just look to the ./Portraits and load whatever TGA files it finds there (I think). If it continues to act strangely you may want to backup your hak, mod, erf and tlk folders and do a clean NWN install.
Anybody got any other ideas for Jo'd that might know the game engine a bit better?

Well I'm all fixed up, thanks to all who helped. Just sorted by date created, deleted all the ones from the same day and voila. Then installed the portrait packs 1-4 and I think I've got more than enough to choose from, even with out 5.1 and 5.2...
Yep, it still takes some time to load up, but not nearly as much. Plus, now it gives me all portraits instead of pictures of chairs, frogs, rocks, sofas, etc.

To PS:
I haven't made any chars in a long while, it is all char portraits that are missing (ie; group icons as well as the one that sits top right IG).

Jo'd, if you haven't tried making a new char in a while, why not give it a shot right now to see if it lets you access the portraits in the char creation menu? That may help narrow down what the problem might be...

I tried making a new char, and was able to access the portraits.

Update:
I now have group portraits showing again. However, my char portrait still shows generic bald dude...any ideas on that one?

When other people see you in game, do they see the bald dude or your original portrait?

Jo'd,
This is definately an odd one. Especially if it worked before. The only other thing I can think of is that the .bic for your PC is corrupted with regard to the portrait and is thus referencing the wrong file (which doesn't exist) in the portraits directory. I think you can do that by exporting the character then editing the exported copy with Leto or a similar utility to figure out what portrait file is listed in the bic. Once you knew what the bic was pointing to you would know for sure whether the problem is on your end or with your bic file. If it is the bic. You could either fix the name of the file in your portrait directory (which would fix it just for you) or go for a more global fix. In that regard, the only things that would fix it globally would probably be a character restore or a bic edit from a friendly DM.
Just some thoughts. Ultimately I'm guessing here so be careful asking for a character restore unless you know for sure the bic is the issue.

Go to the folder and sort them by
Type. If you
View the folder in
Details you see at the top of the listing the following headings:
Name,
Size,
Type, and
Date Modified. Click on the
Type bar. since all the NWN portraits are tga files, they'll all be lumped together. Select everything else and delete.

btw.
http://www.catara-files site seems to be down... impossible to dl the big, ultimate portrait pack.
Jo'd:
dont know, but did you try to save your character (via ESC, than save char. on local vault) and then trying to customize your char. in an offline mod (any one).
right now i'm not 100% sure if you were able to alter the portrait, but it could be possible ....

Nope, sure didn't, I can barely navigate the keyboard, nevermind mess with files.

Update:
Two of my char portraits show on the log-in screen all others are white blanks. I have re-gigged NWN from scratch twice recently, with no change.

Well the portrait download links are dead, so not sure what to say. Do you have your old portrait packs? I've done everything I can to get the portraits as of a couple of days ago, and I can't find a working link anywhere, so hopefully you have your old ones.
