Found this in my inbox this morning:
Dear one
I am writting this letter with due respect and
heartful of tears since we have not known or met
ourselves previously.

I am asking for your assistance
after I have gone through a profile that speaks good
of you. I will be so glad if you can allow and lead me
to the right channel towards your assistance to my
situation now.

I will make my proposal well known if I
am given the opportunity. I would like to use this
opportunity to introduce myself to you. well, i am
hawa kone 22years young girl and I know that this
proposal might be a surprise to you but do consider it
as an emmergency.

In nutshell, My (late) father Mr Morris
was a very wealthy gold and cocoa merchant who based
in Accra and Abidjan respectively. But he
was killed along side with my mother during last year's
Rable attact and all his properties was totally
destroyed.

However, after their death I managed to
escape with a very important document (DEPOSIT
CERTIFICATE (US$6.7) six million seven hundred
thousand U.S Dollars deposited by my late father in the bank
which i am the next of kin.

Meanwhile,i am saddled with the problem of
securing a trust worthy foriegn personality to help me
transfer the money over to his country and into his
possession pending my arrival to meet with him.

Furthermore, you can contact the bank for
confirmation and i will issue a letter of authorisation
on your name, that will enable the bank to
deal with you on my behalf.

I am giving you this offers
as mentioned with every confidence on your acceptance
to assist me or take me as your child and manage the
money. I am inclined to offer you 15% of the total sum
as a mode of compensation for your effort after the
successful transfering of these fund to your
nominated account overseas

Conclusively,i wish you send me a reply
immediately as soon as you recieve this
proposal, please write me back with this email
address (hawakone01@yahoo.com) Until then,i remain with
the best regards

hawa.
Can anything be done to secure the forums? (please delete this post once the relevant people have been informed - I don't want to be spamming spam)

Trouble is sombody somewhere will be tempted by this crap. Its a variation of a very old scam and really it depends on greed.

There are plenty of mugs i heard that some police force investigating it got a list of names of people who had been tempted and answered this. One of the names was a policeman in their headquarters

I guess that's why my e-mail said I had a new PM, but when I got here, there was nothing new!

And man, I've been gettin' a TON of these scam e-mails lately, it's like open season or something.

I've convinced someone to make preparations to upgrade the boards.

It will take a while, and be done in a seperate environment to make sure there is minimal downtime (ie, only when the actual switch is done)... But will be worth it.

5 bucks - it is a reverse pm from someone who had a listed a short cut of the web site or email {most likely this} on this forum. If one connects to another email thru this forum - you on the adresses list. This type of spam works throgh people e-mail

I never did make a fortune on the Nigerian gold via bankok channel either.

Your internet provider may have an email address that you can forward spam too, there they will block the IP address after tracing back the address the email asks you to reply too
{in this case it looks like it was through Yahoo, ask them first}

rots o ruck

I like what the guy from Something Awful did, he had a string of incoherent email dialog where I think he eventually was asking the nigerian guy for money so he could set it all up.

That sums up the problem here. Reminds me of the expression "You can't cheat an honest man"

Set up a spam filter. Should catch most of this stuff.
