Hey ok heres a breif outline of my dillema, i am at college, and there is a firewall *glares at techmaster* and there is a nice little program which im sure some of you are familiar with called http tunnel client... well heres the thing ive downloaded that and its fine, but theres anothe program needed called sockscap, i have it downloaded. When i try to install it, it says "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft WIndows applications"... then says close /ignore,,, ive tried ignore, it just doesnt install.. anyone know what this means or how to get around it.. pleaase *tears out hair* I NEED MY FIX If you are techinal knowledge of any sort please try and help i can post more specifics if you ask. Let me get this straight, you're trying to tunnel a http connection through the firewall. Do you even have an endpoint?

Gamespy server well basically the program is you install the tunnler, open it, (its for technical retards) then open sockscap and brose for the EXE of NWN, then when i go to connect it will auto get through the firewall and connect to Gamespy so i can play online through the firewall, do you know of another way i could do it? or perhaps whats wrong with this program? i have it downloaded but like i said somthings wrong with installer/installation process

That's not making sense at all.

To connect to the gamespy server, you'd need to connect on a specific port. If that port is firewalled, yes, you could tunnel it, however you'd need an end point to forward your connection onto the gamespy server.

What you're describing here is that all traffic leaving that network is via a Proxy, is this correct?

Edit: You're running http-tunnel-client on your home machine?

yah sorry i didnt specify thats correct its a proxy the firewall is the schools firewall preventing me from accessing anything from D2 battlenet to gamespy and im accesing it from my laptop which alternates as home/school comp.

Ok, well you've started going about this the right way, but unfortunately what you're describing to me won't work, regardless of whether you can install the program or not.

I'll try to put this in laymans terms to make it easier to understand.

What you're attempting to do is to tunnel through the proxy by encapsulating all data flow in HTTP. To actually "tunnel" you do require two ends, otherwise it'd be a 'hole', not a 'tunnel'.

For this to work in theory, you would need two machines. One, your machine, and two, the other machine which is outside your internal network and the proxy there.

You would also have to set the other computer there to take all traffic from port 80 (The HTTP Port), make it back into normal traffic, and then redirect it back out to the internet.


For example, a quick Diagram.

Laptop ---- | Http Encapsulator | ---- | Proxy | ---- | Http Encapsulator on other end | ---- | Other Machine| ---- | Port Redirection | ---- | Other Service |

Unfortunately, there's another hitch. I honestly don't believe that the tunnel would be good enough to even pass game traffic, as it relies on quite a few factors, not to mention the fact that you're likely to time out quite a lot.

Simply put, you're not going to be able to do this with one machine, and even with two, there's not really any 'for dummies' solution. If you had another computer outside the network, you could possibly set up an SSH tunnel.

Tell them to do it for you too with the NWN ports (5121-5200) or delete the programs?

Yah im trying but how can i? i know it can be done, and i know how to, but its just that error message when i try and install sockscap...

Yes
You need to extract the autoexec.nt file from the (or any) original CD for your type of windows.
There is a command line....let me look....one minute please...

Here:

This issue may occur if one or more of the following files are missing or damaged:
• Config.nt
• Autoexec.nt
• Command.com
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
1. Insert the CD into the CD drive or DVD drive.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:


expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com
exit

That will fix your install problem.

Post here if you have further problems and hopefully I will stumble on to it again

Also note when you get errors like that one try doing a google search of one or parts of the term. Ive solved meny of problems on my computer searching google. It can take a bit fiding the right websight, but thats how i always fix my problems normally.

Lots of the times google points windows error messages straight to microsofts websight. Ive found and fixed some windows error messages from doing a search with in microsofts websight as well.

Video games are great and all, but maybe you should stop trying to break through your uni's security (which could probably get you kicked off campus) and use your college years to level up in RL instead.

NWN's been around for years, but you only get one go at undergrad. Well, unless you turn into that creepy old guy in the dorms that's been there forever, like Tom Green in Road Trip. Take advantage of it.

Its really really not worth getting kicked off your course for something like that.

Is a game really that important that you're willing to regret playing it for the rest of your life?

Definitely agreed with. I was just trying to turn the fact that he was trying to tunnel in a subtle attempt to make him learn something.

As a general rule, I would tend to think universities view the respective violations of "getting drunk" and "hacking firewall" as incomparable offenses.
