OK Dammit I hate this crap my computer is in pain!! Herpies Malware whatever you want to call it!! So I am out of order for a time until I can either stop it from multiplying or buy another antivirus. Worse thing I will have to reformat which I am loathing to do. *Sacrifices Software to the Computer God*
Please heal my computer!! LOL
Anyway I will be out of sorts until it is resolved so anyone who is part of the Plots I am running and such do not fret, they will continue soon....

Step 1:

It's not a substitute for a full-on antivirus program but may get some of the more recent ones. Run it.

Step 2:

Microsoft anti-spyware. Install, update, run a full scan. Keep the autoprotect on. make sure it sets things back to their defaults (websites for your start location, default search etc. You can also set these to default to what you want them to be, ie google or avlis)

Step 4:

Get a full antivirus program. Run a full scan in case stinger left anything out.

p.s. Microsoft also has a "malicious software removal tool" that you can get as part of Windows Update. Not sure how well it works. This is seperate from the anti-spyware program AFAIK. Stinger is a good one-off short term solution.

err...ok Stinger still.

and hmm... maybe Spybot Search & Destroy. That was my second choice. I stopped using it once Windows anti-spyware came out and did a better job getting rid of stuff.

Spybot S&D has an autoprotect as well. Called "immunize" or something.

Microsoft do a Beta release?

I though all Microsoft software was Beta - hence all the Critical Update Patches

We went through some SERIOUS issues relating to malware, spyware, etc at work.. It was nasty. My recommendations would be to get off the beta as stated, especially if its not patchable or updateable through "windows update" Nearly all of the really bad malware/spyware/adware problems happen with XP are because of the existing security holes and problems in earlier versions of XP. Until you can patch those, you'll have a hard time cleaning your machine. If you want some more detailed steps of what worked well for me in removing some of the nasty stuff, let me know and I'll shoot you an email. But as i mentioned, you really need to have windows patched and updated first to be effective.

Trying to clean a beta version is going to be like trying to stop the draftiness in your house by closing the all the windows, but ignoring the gaping holes in your roof.

Issue is I dont have the $ to go out and buy XP home edition. Its like 100 bucks so I am stuck with it now....

I honestly think creating spyware and all that other crap should be illegal.

It self-installs itself onto your computer, which we bought so it is our property, without permission so technically they are trespassing and using our property illegally.

Pop-ups also use up system resources WHICH I PAID FOR, so those who create and host pop-ups that use MY bandwidth should be prosecuted for theft and harrasement.

Its beyond me why the government lets these people create these things....

Spybot search and destroy with the immunize setting on kicks butt.

avg anti virus is alright but ANTIVIRis better cause ya get updates every day and it blocks trojoan horses. Both are free.

Another id suggest everyone getting is a program called SPYWARE BLASTER. Its a program that has a list that you have to keep up todate of all the bad spyware out there, and makes it so it cant even install on your computer silently in the back ground.

ZONE ALARMS FIREWALL-now has spyware protection in it as well. So with a combination of all them programs i havent seen any spyware/ bad cookies on my computer in long time.

The nortons websight has a good amount of info to get rid of spyware, viruses and trojans as well.

I use the norton internet security/antivirus package in combination with spybot S&D. A bit pricey, but I've never had a problem with viruses while using norton (although it does consider gamespy as adware).

I am screwed not even a system restore is working. Hell, it won't let me restore my computer... So seems I am dead in the water for now. Figures this would happen to me. Spen three months with no viable internet and my first week I get a virus... Soooo I am going to have reformat. No clue what OS I Am going to use...

Those there will assist you if you follow the instructions/directions.

I'd suggest finding an online scanning service for both (I'm sure there are free ones out there). You'll probably be surprised / horrified as to how much you have on your machine. Just because you don't know you have it, doesn't mean it's not there. Don't wait until your PC dies before you sort this out.

As they're free, there's really no reason not to have it.

Although I'm still having a problem with a nasty self-installing piece of crap called SpyAxe......

Doesn't seem to do anything besides consume system resources and load pop-ups though.....

Well I am reformatting and I have a real copy of Windows XP as well as I am installing Norton so I hope that will do the trick. Hopefuly I will be up and running at the end of the day..
