xp penalties

My character is an elf 5th level barbarian 7th level sorcerer soon to dable in the ways of a palemaster, but thats my problem lol,. My question for you is how am i affected with the xp penalty ive been incurring. The favored class of an elf is a wizard not a sorcerer and ive shifted to more than one level between. Does the penalty come as soon as i kill or craft something? Or is it later. Ive got no PnP D&D books anymore so im clueless as to how this works. Not that it really matters just curious on a little clarification.

Thank you for youre time

the XP penalty is automatically applied to kills.

IIRC from playing Al it doesnt apply to DM cookies

thanks for the prompt reply Al one other thing can you tell me how much of a penalty it is?

20% rounded down

so if you would have got 1xp before you would get 0xp

Moved to NWN General Discussion. Game mechanics questions (and not Avlis specific) are best asked here since lots of people can provide you with an answer, not just the Avlis Team.

I am currently unable to look at my NWN's manual, but I am pretty sure that your 2 classes of bard and sorc will have to be 5 levels apart before the XP penalty is applied (maybe someone can help me with that number).

Palemaster being a PrC, will not count against you for XP penalty. Only regular classes will. So, As long as you keep your barb/sorc levels within the range, you could have a 8 barb/8 sorc/ 20 PM and not incur any penalty.

Someone please check the manual for me and reply.

Thanks,

PrC's don't give you xp penalties. If you keep your other two classes within 1 level of each other, you won't have a penalty.

If your 5th/7th you are already eating the Xp penalty because your classes are more than one level away from each other. The good thing is PrC's dont incur xp penalties so the Palemaster wont give you a horrendous 40% penalty. One more barb level and you will have no penalty at all

Let me simply go on record as stating... that xp penalty is a real gimp later on in a pc's life....and it blows IMHO. 8)

theres already at least one other Barb/necromancer out there. Wrong alignment for PM though

Hm...*thinks about who that might be* Still, he should look me up. Alignments can be changed, and being necro. is close enough anyway. ;)

Even if you did manage to change his alignment, its too late for him to be a PM now. He has an ECL, that meanc that he cant take a third class

I didnt read anything about an ECL. He said his character is an elf. where are you reading about an ECL?

That would be a different character I'm talking about

Yep. Once virtually everything you kill becomes 1xp (most things when epic) you get stung big time.

I agree that it is a silly system (the whole favoured class thing is - the only reason it is favoured is because it doesn't gimp characters.), but it is not as if it came out of nowhere - it is stated in the manual that you get the penalty if you have two bases classes that aren't "favoured" for your race.

the whole favoured class is a crock of shit to. a elf makes the best wizard? pfft.

Yeah, I agree. Maybe it is just me (because I play one) but I think of Ranger/Archer when I think of elves. I think of humans more when I think of wizards (mainly due to Merlin, and Gandalf)

Plus you would expect that favoured class would give some kind of bonus - it doesn't.

Well it sort of does, it gives you an extra 20%, just not exclusively ;)

Anyway, as agreed the xp penalty does suck.

I don't think cancelling out an artificially created penalty (which only happens under certain conditions anyway) can be considered a bonus :-)

For those who have a single base class there is no difference between choosing your favoured class or any other.

Neither of these were human.

Merlin, from the early version of the tale was only half human. You could call him a half elf or maybe a teifling, depending on your interpretation.

Gandalf was not at all human, despite appearances. He was a Maia, an imortal being of the same class as Sauron and the Balrogs.
