Role-playing death in Avlis...

I've tried a search, but I believe the thread history has been wiped out lately..
I'm sort of new to Avlis, and would like to know how you role-playing dying and going to get your body. Are you a lost soul? Are you inventory-less duplicate of yourself? It's hard for me to come to grasps with this concept and role-play it correctly (and I died twice last night, so I'm getting good practice!)

The way I see it..
You appear at the temple and that is your fysical body. Just without items. You are just as flesh and blood as the moment before your death. You could ignore your items on your previous corpse and play forever on - don't worry about being a ghost.
As for how to RP it.. well at first it's really big for most characters (the first time my sorc died she was bewildered by being alive again, when my archer was back in Mikona he thought he was immortal). For my main it's still something she hates and avoids - it might really be the final time now - but she isn't that scared of dying nowdays, having walked over the grass of Elysium.. like 60+ times.

I see it the same as Naieth. Your char, arriving naked at the temple is your phyisical self. the only one. I treat the deathcorpse as being merely all your item lefts where you fell.
The way i see it, it is like if you leave an ice cream cone out in the sun. The icecream disappears, but the cone, and any toppings are left where they lay

The Ice Cream Cone School of Philosophy - very nice.
As I see it, your Deity is either pleased with you and has given you another chance, or is not satisfied and sends you back to finish the job you are supposed to do (depends on the Deity, I suppose). You arrive back in the Temple, naked. You run back to the shrivelled corpse you left behind to reclaim the property you had. The corpse then shrivels away and you continue with the task your Deity has set for you. You are grateful to your Deity - you might even want to give thanks. You continue the fight, determined to do a better job, in honour of your Deity.
It is better for your character not to tempt Fate and assume that he or she will always be sent back. As far as the character is concerned, Death is something to be feared and avoided if possible - not just a walk in the park - or even the forest. Each time you are sent back, you should be grateful and relieved for another chance at Life.
If Death means nothing then this becomes just an arcade game -
Game Over - Insert Coin to Start a New Game. The penalties imposed - loss of XP or Gold - are not the point. Your character should fear Death and assume that they will not be reborn, imho

Actually the corpse is still there and you can do anything you want with it. It's actually a physical item so you can even carry it about. This is used to unmasking people, checking for markings, etc.

After the first hundred times or so, I think anything begins to become severely mundane, even dying. My main is convinced that the gods are punishing him by sending him back to experience death again and again. My alt avoids death like the plague. He has only died a handful of times, and wants to keep it that way. Once he even performed last rites on himself, in the hopes that if it wasn't actually him and he was a doppleganger (odd that the Germans have a word for that) that he would in fact rest in peace and not come back seeking vengence. I think it is up to each individual character and their philosophy on death to determine how they react to dying.

The trick is learning to RP a faster way to run from Werecats
And not taking along people that will abandone you at the first sign of trouble

Fear of death is a long debated issue amongst some of us. Some characters, like mine, walk a fine line between courage and insanity. Yes, she fears death. She does not want to die. She knows from experience that losing favor in the eyes of her Deity is not an enjoyable thing.. During the time she had lost her Diety, I was very careful in making sure that she did not die, not ever. If she had, and had not been raised by a friend.. I would have perma killed her off, since her diety would not have sent her back... at the time she had no diety.
It's all about perspective. In my opinion, you should fear death as much as any normal person who does not knwo they will be sent back does. You should not, IMHO, stand up to the level 60 Beast of Uber Hatefull kill you all ness and mock it... you should, again IMHO, give it the respect you would give it as if you did not know you would die and return.
Anyone with the attitude of "death.. meh.. so what... I'll just come back later... is in my opinion, cheesing at best.

I see a lot of talk of dietys bring you back.
Dagath is the diety of life, death, and rebirth. Unless you are a cleric, holywarrior, or member of a religious order; Folks who are personly looked over by their deity. It is dagath, noone else.
Dagath brings your character back because it is not your time. That does not mean it will not be two minutes from now.

The death corpse has to be some part of your PC's organic body, otherwise you wouldn't be able to raise dead or resurrect a PC, or so the 3E rules go...

Personally I find the whole idea so unrealistic that it is impossible to RP it without ruining the suspension of disbelief.
It's obviously necessary for obvious game mechanics reasons (has anyone ever played on one of those PWs where if you die you don't EVER respawn?

), but as far as the RP side of it goes I prefer to act like it never happened?
When I finally recover my "death corpse" I RP it like I've just woken up from unconsciousness, having been defeated and out of action for the period for that reason rather:
Ronus One-Eye" "*rubs head* Ouch, where am I? How long was I out?" etc.

Actually, I had never even thought about it, just always considered it a part of life on Avlis. In a LARP I help run, it has a similar death system, think of it like planar travel can only keep soul bound items (plot items) so you can't take your stuff.

I RP fear of death even though Aborea is the best afterlife ever. So pretty much if I return (which I always do) it would be "the gods still have work for me to do" or "I have unfinished buisiness." Always hate dying cuz its the fact that you actually fell in battle leaving others behind.

The Abyss is the greatest death plane ever, I mean you get to kill your way out! how fitting is that, eh?
It's even better in an event where all the Reavers get to see their plane. We've had meetings, parties, even barfights in our deathplane.

Seriously the way Avlis and death works, you do have to rp that the corpse is physically real also. As Serinath pointed out, it is ok to ID someone you've killed by looking at their corpse for instance.
Some of us evil types even rp cutting of parts of our fallen foes' anatomy for food , souveneers, or whatever.
Like all things rp'ed I think people need to be somewhat flexible in this to meet the situation, and make it fun for others.
I remember once my character had lycanthropy and was killed by some good folk in the marketplace. Through tells we rp'd that they'd tied me up after they put me down, so when I got back to my body I couldn't just go on another rampage if I shape-shifted.
