Okay, I came up with this idea of a rogue (human), that early in his career made a few "Learning Experience" type mistakes.
One of which is never, ever, trust anything a wizard has put inside a sealed chest.

Here is what I had in mind. Tef, an aspiring young rogue, makes one of the biggest heists in his limited career! He has stolen, at great risk to himself, a small ornate chest from a wizards tower. Checking the box he finds the trap set upon it and disarms it with some difficulty, after that the lock is child's play.

Inside nestled in red satin is a gem the size of a robin's egg! Giddy with excitement, he reaches in and pulls out his new found treasure. He feels a twisting sense of nausea as SOMETHING ripples through his body and to add insult to injury, the gem disappears.

The next morning he awakens to find that none of his clothes fit...seems he has been become a Halfling sometime in the night!



Now, the gist of what I want to play is that randomly he will shapeshift into another race, and my question is should I start out with a Changeling, or is there someway to change his racial look at login? I am not looking for stat differences, as a matter of fact I would prefer that they never change, just wondering if there is a way to do the "Curse of Shifting" bit.

Changling would be the only way to do it.

I believe changelings can't change into halfling and other smaller than human races when they are level 1. They gain the ability to change into smaller (and bigger?) shapes as their progress in levels.

Hmm, wouldnt you also have to actually be a changeling? Ie it would be cheesing if you said that you are not a changeling, but you had a curse that shifted you into different shapes. So you would be using the mechanism that being a changeling gives you to cheese an ability that isnt in the engine or summit?

You could perhaps say that the gem unlocked the knowledge that you were a changling, and that you always thought you were a human until the gem got touched, but ..... if your PC race is changling you cant actually be a human that changes!?!?!?!

That would be similar to being a dark skinned elf that wields 2 scimitars, is CG and worships Ellistrea(sp) but is actually a moon elf pretending to be drow.

Isn't a Changeling a volitary thing? I was wanting this to be more along the lines of something that is not beneficial, but more a curse.

But I see your point, perhaps I will just ditch the idea and run a vanilla character.

A curse like this would be cheesing, I'm afraid. Changelings change intentionally, as do Shifters. There exists in Avlis no such mechanism, so by definition it would be cheesing.

There are still myriads of myriads of unique character concepts out there - choose vanilla only if you like the taste.

To throw a new look at this;

How about that gem polymorphed(or some other spell/curse) the character INTO a changeling? Since he wasn't 'born' a changling, his changes could be subcousious or stress related. The character may THINK he's cursed, but in reality is just a normal changling who hasn't the foggiest idea how to actually do the changes voluntarily.

This would take away (IMO) the 'cheesing' factor (he really is a changeling), but still let the character RP like it was a curse (since the character THINKS it is a curse).

On reflection....think I am going to go for a more nut fudge ripple kinda guy....yeah, that would prolly be WAY more interesting. Thanks Alero
