Ok comrades this is the problem. My ISP provider has decided to cut me off because they lost our payment information, and to update it they can only speak to the account holder, who happens to be away for the next week. Choice words come to mind but this isn't rants and raves so lets just assume that I am unhappy.

Im cancelling the account with them and going with someone else.

So, can anyone in the UK tell me if there is an ISP provider for dial up 56k connection who charge less than ?20 per month and DON'T kick me off every 2 hours, forcing me to reconnect?

I use Demon, their standard charge is about ?11.75 a month, and if you have BT you can get surf-time which can get you free calls to your ISP (evening and weekends costs about ?6 a month). They don't force a re-connect after 2 hours.

My parents use AOL which is better value (free calls anytime for ?15) and doesn't force a reconnect, the downside is that it is AOL

its not dial up I know, but I seem to remember broadband 1/4 meg ADSL lines going for around that.

Pipex for one do 150kbps, free connection, free hardware for ?15.99 per month and 512kbps for ?19.99 and their coverage seems really good (well, as good as BT ADSL as it uses that network).

Who were you with?

I was with freeserve, who at some point in the last 8 months got taken over by wanadoo.

I don't want to get ADSL/broadband yet as Im back living with my parents until Ive got the money for a house, probably 6 months away. Till then I'm staying with a 56k dial up, but getting kicked off every 2 hours drives me insane. Especially when you are involved with a meeting and get kicked during the middle of an important bit, doesn't look good in game.

Can I ask whats wrong with AOL? I'm not sure if we are aloud to slate ISP's on these forums but I thought I'd ask.

Had though about trying Daemon. Are they good?

Don't know much about AOL other than their software can be a bit invasive. The quote I heard was "once you've installed AOL, you can never be rid of it".

I assume from the "Only speak to the account holder" you're with NTL

If you can get in touch with the account holder and get the password from them they will speak to anyone with the password.

If you're not with NTL - use them for dial up - unlimited internet time for ?10 a month

No its Freeserve, or Wanadoo what ever they are called now. But the helpful guy on the helpdesk wouldn't speak to me, even though I said I had set the account up and new the pass word. Wasn't impressed.

Does NTL have a 2 hour kick off time?

Dont go with Freeserve, they are dicks. heh.

Nah, you've got to have an NTL phone connection, and we are with BT. Don't want to use Bt anytime either, tried that before, connection speed seemed to vary alot and kept getting kicked at completely random times.

Demon are very good - have been with them for years, and I am soon going to upgrade my service to a 512 broad-band which will cost ?25 all in (no longer need to pay the ?11.75 as it is covered with the ?25 a month charge) - you get unlimited email addresses which is good as well.

AOL are good if you are a total i-net noob, but it is a complete pita if you like to use your own software as they have an application suite that they try and force on you. There is also a bit of net snobbery towards AOL users. My parents are happy with AOL as it is an easy interface, I don't like it as I like to have my choice of what applications to use and find the AOL programs to be too idiot-proof and limited.

Ok, I went with Demon. ?11.75p/m for unlimited access seemed good to me. And they did say there was no usage cap, so hopfully I won't get kicked in the middle of my Avlis time now.

I use Demon, as already described above.

However, I also use UKlinux, as their WebHosting is cheaper.

This is FREE, as long as you use their Dialup Service for at least one hour per month, with a Standard Local Call charge for the call.

You get Web Hosting on a Linux box, with PSP, MySQL, and email, all for nothing a month - just local call charges.

No time limits and no disconnect.

I advise you to take a look at pipex http://www.pipex.net to be honest, ?25 for 512 is pretty steep I only pay ?30 or so for my 1 meg.

I know I could get it cheaper elsewhere, but for me the benefits of keeping my existing email addresses and sticking with a company who I know provide great support when things do go wrong is worth the ?5 difference in price each month.
