Problems with NWN...

So I've got everything fully updated and patched; I've got all the haks and everything, and I've tried running it with the No-CD hack (i.e. no SecuROM), but my NWN keeps crashing.

When I run it without the no-CD hack, I can get right to where I'm standing in Mikona, and a few seconds later, it crashes. When I run it with the No-CD hack, I get to the character selection screen, and it crashes. I've reinstalled *everything* once (I lost my journals doing it), and it fixed it for a little while, but now I'm having the same problem again. Any ideas?

Run memtest86 overnight. Check the CPU/MB temps in your BIOS. Check your fans are running properly - CPU, MB cooler and Video card. I've had similar problems with an overheating video card GPU...

Fragmentation wont cause the game to crash, it could be 99% fragmented, it still wont cause the game to crash.

Do what srn said.

It shouldn't, not directly at least, but it will affect performance badly. It may affect performance to such an extent that Windows or the application can not cope with it, and this could cause a crash. Hell it's only s/w afterall, we all know it's full of bugs.

One issue I have though, is there are certain things that seem to make my NWN crash. I.e. there is a house in Rockhome with Sea Hags in, and as soon as they start to do anything EVERYONE in the area crashes out. Other times the game seems to crash is when certain creatures cast things, but those are random. Highly annoying to be in an action scene and then just have the game come up with a crash message.

Eh, it's Windows; it's not rational. I've seen things which had *no* right to work work, and things which had *every* reason to work not work, until the *right* person came up and restarted. For all anyone knows, it could be reacting to the fact I'm not wearing pants.

This is true.

It can also be that the extra work is causing something to overheat. It never hurts to run a memory test & check the temperatures every now and then, anyway.

Getting a disk checking utility is also a good idea - all the drive manufacturors have one, and they can actually warn you well in advance of an actual drive failure.
