NWN server hardware & OS...

Okay, this is a topic I'm sure there's going to be a lot of debate on, but I would ask that folks try not to turn it in to a hotbed of AMD vs. Intel (especially since Intel sucks) and Linux vs Windows... THat said:
Given the recent problems with lag on Avlis being related to a worm that only Windows was vulnerable to, and the given stability and overhead performance differences between Linux and Windows, I find myself wondering why the lords of Avlis have chosen to use the Microsoft OS as the platform for Avlis instead of Linux?
Now, I'm sure there are considerations that went in to it... most of the staff here seems too intelligent to have made the decision without at least having put a little thought in to it, I'm just curious as to what those considerations are. What is it that I don't know about NWN or mass hosting that made Windows the better choice? Or was it simply a matter of what your server provider was willing to let you have?
What are the specs for the Avlis servers? Is each module run on an independant computer or are they all running from the same box? What is average processor load during 'prime time'? How much RAM is in each box? How much hard drive space, approximately, is used by the total game (including all mods) in its current state?
I ask these questions because the topic interests me. I've been thinking for a couple of years now about starting up a server farm as a side business. I have no doubt as to my technological abilities and knowledge, and I know I could get bandwidth rates that made it doable. What I don't know is why people want different things, and what are reasonable hardware requirements for a project of this size, since this is the type of stuff I would prefer to host.
TIA.
