Question regarding magical armour and items

I have noticed that some magical items that increase your AC are not compatible with other items, giving a "not stackable" type message.

Does anyone know which items are compatible with others and which aren't?

For instance, say I had these items :

Armour +1 AC
Cloak +1 AC
Boots +1 AC
Ring +1 AC
Helm +1 AC
Amulet +1 AC
Belt +1 AC

.... not all of these +1's would stack, so which ones are compatible with which others, or is it simply a number (ie you can have no more than 3 items that increase your AC)?

All these different items have a specific AC that they increase. Natural Armor, like a Amulet, Deflection like a cloak of protection and Armor like a +3 suit of armor or bracers of armor. Different items that give you the same type of armor do not stack as far as I can tell.

That is about correct yes.

Bonusses to armour are many in variation. The most common are Armor, Natural Armor, deflection and dodge. Most of these will stack with eachother, but not with themselves. So two rings of protection would both give a bonus to deflection armor class and would thus not stack.

The exception to this rule is dodge, dodge should always stack. Both with other armor bonusses and with other dodge bonusses.

ahhh - I didn't realise that there were different types (I really must get the 3rd edition book at some point). This explains why some items I thought shouldn't stack did, and the other way round.

I'll have to have a closer look at the item descriptions when I next log on.

Thanks again :)

edit:
After having a look at my equipment ...... everything becomes clear !!

Thank you

I think the same applies to magical resistances too. Like if I wore an armor with 10 magical resistance and tried a cloak with 5, it would only be 10 instead of 15. And these applies to all the resistances I think (poison, slashing, bludgeoning etc). It takes the highest of what you have on if I am not mistaken.

Usually if I buy something from somebody they let me try it on first and see how it turns out. The only bummer is if you get something from a vendor. He wont give you a try before you buy.

really? i was sure that if you had two rings of fort +2 you'd have a total of +4 to your fort saves

saves and ability scores do stack in NWN

not resists, not ACs (except dodge)

ok i have Deflection +4 Natural +5 and Armor Bonus+5 that is all that i know of that stacks + sheild stacks, I have +2 armor bonus on armor that is canceled out by my +5 armor bonus bracers and +1 on my belt that is canceld out by my +4 on ring so i have wasted ac in some places but i got stacked as much as possible

hope that helps some

Okay this is Glok's quick and easy guide to AC bonunes.

Anything giving the same type of bonus doesnt stack. I.E. Helm with a +1 deflection bonus doesnt stack with a ring of Protection +2 that gives a deflection bonus.

The only excecption to this is dodge bonuses, which ALWAYS stack together.

AC bonuses stack with different types of AC bonuses.

I hope that helps.

Improved Critical also stacks with a Keen weapon. The Feat Improved Criticals will also stack with an Improved Criticals item, I *think*.

If by "improved critical item" you mean a item that grants use of the improved critical feat (improved critical: unarmed in other words since that's the only imp crit you can get without scripting), then it most likely doesnt stack, simply because you already got that feat. It would like having alertness and getting a item that grants alertness and suddenly getting +4 spot and listen... which all in all wouldnt be so unbalanced in that instance but you hopefully get my point.

I knew I could rely on a Brother to give me the straight answer - cheers Glok!

This is kind of off topic from the original post on AC, but I think what was meant was that if you have a keen weapon, which increases the critical range over the standard weapon of that type, then taking the improved critical feat for that weapon type will further increase the critical range of that weapon, which to my understanding is correct. I also know that spot, search, and similar skills do stack with feats and items that grant bonuses to those skills.

A keen weapon used by some with improved critical in that weapon triples the critical range.

Longsword (normal) Crit on: 19-20
Longsword (keen or with improved critical) Crit on: 17-20
Longsword (keen and with improved critical) Crit on: 15-20
Rapier (keen and with improved critical) Crit on: 12-20 (scary eh?)

If you have a feat and an item gives you that feat again it does not stack unless the feats are stackable (and the only one that springs to mind in that case is extra turning). Items do stack with feats though. You can have skill focus (perform) and then wear the greater gloves of perform and a ring with perform bonus and the belt of the performer and they will all add up. But an item that gives you skill focus (perform) will not.
