Ok so, Divvil has been sparse(r) for the past week, which is unfortunately due to the high temps here in New England

With temperatures inside my house soaring in the mid 90's and not a breeze to cool things down (it was 87 at 5 am inthe morning inside the house and that is with all windows open) I can't turn on my PC because it might fry both my brain and the box. I am not willing to try and see which can outlast the other.

I currently only have one mobile AC in the house, but I can't (and won't) expect my wife to sit next to me while I play and it's not enough to cool the entire 2200 sq ft condo. Unfortunately, window AC units are out of the question due to the design of my replacement windows.

We're looking into getting central AC installed, but that won't happen anytime soon as it is quite pricey.

Soooo I will be on the boards, but until the temp inside my house drops to livable levels I won't be playing much, unless the wife is away and I can wheel the mobile over to my office.

So ironically, yes it CAN be too hot, even for a Divvil

Open windows, close blinds and curtains. Darker places are cooler places.

Right there with you, man. It was 87 in my house with the windows open at 3AM this morning. There'll be some relief coming tomorrow I think!

You New Englanders are so funny with your 87 degree "heat waves" and your lack of AC and your ability to open the windows without getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.

A welcome series of storms has kept us below 100 so far! It's nice for things to stay in the 90s into July.

Yeah, it is only 87 down here right now. Of course it's raining at the moment and we have a tropical wave heading for us. We are also still fighting off the mosquitoes from hurricane Alex last week.

I am basking in my 57°F/14°C day.
I even had to put a hoodie on. Brr.

It's gotten pretty warm here, for here, at almost 30°C (which is right where you're at LD). Two words: Heat Pump!

I feel your pain Lil'. I was stuck on the red line going home yesterday with no AC. Picture 100+ degrees in a train car filled with sweety disgusting people while the train chugged along at about 15 mph. I miss the snow...

"your ability to open the windows without getting eaten alive by mosquitoes" == mosquito screens are pre-installed even in my super-crappy rented house.

The current 80-90 doesn't reflect the feeling (around 40C I'll say, something like 104 in Funnygrades...), New Haven and many other parts of new England are swamps with serious humidity level.

Rio de Janeiro last February was less suffocating, dry heat is much more bearable.

It was over 100 in my town. Also, we DO have mosquitos. I live in the woods, man. Note that the 87f was at THREE IN THE FUCKING MORNING ...

Today, I decided to do some spackling and prep work to repaint in the upstairs bathroom. That was fun!

Like Spool said, once the rain came in it has been remarkably cool here for July.

Once it quits, I'll finally be able to enjoy more of the 100+ days with 70% and up humidity

I have both curtains and/or blinds installed on all 33 windows in my house (yes I have 33 fucking windows, imagine what blinds cost me) and they are closed as long as the sun is out. Additionally my house is on a hill, not surrounded by any shady trees and all 4 sides see the sun at some point during the day.

At night I had about 20 windows open (thank god for bug screens) and have windows fans on all sides creating a current, but with nighttime temperatures in the mid 80's it doesn't do jack. If it were cooler at night it would not be an issue as I can get air moving with the fans, but if outside is as hot as inside all I do is moving fresh hot air in to replace old hot air.

As soon as I get a chance I will have central installed on the 3rd floor (before we finish the attic, so the ducts are in the floor space) but this probably means I will be driving my 9 year old beat up volvo s40 a bit longer too

I don't like the hot weather, but I guess I will live through it, but we sure need a rain. Been right around 40 days without one. I think the last rain was about May 25th right here. If farmers cannot irrigate, their corn is about toasted and beans will be on that route soon if we don't get some rain. I am really starting to feel for some of the farmers right in my area. I guess our last drought was 1980, so maybe we are ~do~ one, but I sure don't like it.

Last year we had enough hail damage that we needed a new roof... I had them put white shingles on. The guy tried to argue with me, a lot... neighbors said it'd look terrible, but I didn't care.

This summer, it's about 15 degrees cooler in my attic than it was last year. I am saving quite a lot of cash from the difference...

My dad did the same thing at his workplace (30,000 sq ft metal building). Cooled it off quite a bit too.

Never thought about white shingles though!

If you live in an area that is relatively sunny all the time, the solar attic fans are pretty nice too. They help circulate and vent the hot air and you can get tax credit! My parents have some on their house and it makes a nice difference.

In the end the white shingles aren't a glaring white, they have a bit of a grayish blue mixed in which matches the brickwork on our house perfectly. It was win all the way around!

When I was little I lived in Phoenix, AZ with no air conditioning. I spent every summer there until I was 15, too. Dry heat is sooo much better than the sauna we get here in Austin ug

Already posted some of this to Divvil, but can't hurt to repeat it. These are ways we survived in the desert with no A/C when I was a kid:

• *Ice in a bowl in front of a fan = A/C
  *Put wet washcloths in the freezer and use them on pulse points to get quick relief (back of the neck, inside of the wrists, etc)
  *Eat cold stuff that has a lot of water content (staying hydrated is really important!), we ate a lot of frozen grapes, they also make a neat replacement for ice cubes in juice or alcoholic drinks
  *Keep your hair damp
  *Go bare foot at all times
  *A spray bottle with water in it set to 'mist' is awesome, just spritz your face and get instant cool down
  *Keep the house closed up and dark during the hottest part of the day
  *Aluminum foil, shiny side out, in the windows works wonders...but does look like shit
  *wear a damp t-shirt (be careful with that one because you can get too cold even in very hot weather)
  *Window fans should point in on one side of the house and out on the other side of the house
  *Don't cook

Anyway, hope some of that might help a little bit!

I got home from work about a week ago at 2 in the afternoon and the wife said " It seems to be a bit cooler today why don't you go mow the front lawn." I have a heat sensor on the front porch in the shade which tells me the temperature outside and inside. Outside it was 104.

I'll have to try the ice in a bowl bit sometime... Suppose Ihave to put it on something so that the condensation outside of the bowl from the ice mixing with the humidity doesn't cause a puddle everywhere...

Less condensation with plastic bowls, generally, but metal seems to work better since it also gets cold.
