Question about satellite internet?

Just moved to area where I can't get dsl. Looking at satellite internet and not sure what companies to use and how that works with playing on Avlis. Some have download and upload limits, what does this do to game play? Anyone using satellite to play and if so what and how much?
Thanks,
Dennis

First off its expensive as hell to get started if you buy the equipment. If you lease its a little cheaper. The best service you can get as far as I know is comparable to DSL light 1.5 Meg download, 256Kb upload. Oh and here is the kicker most places make you sign a two year contract. Depending on who you pick you may be able to get a package deal and save a bit of cash on monthly cost.
I have heard mixed reviews about some folks swear up and down about satellite internet some have told me they will stick with dial up and not deal with the headaches.

It seems a lot of it depends on what company you go with. I was once on satellite for pretty much the same reason, and we started out with Clearwire. Biggest piece of shit I'd ever seen. I honestly wished I was on dial-up. And I wasn't the only one sick of it, the rest of the family was too, so eventually we got onto a new ISP that ran smooth as butter, I forgot it was satellite and not DSL or cable. Unfortunately I can't remember what it was called exactly, but it seemed to be a small local start-up so you probably wouldn't be able to get it anyway.
As far as I could tell, Clearwire was meant more for casual internet users, not us gamers. The kind of people that use their internet to check their email and browse myspace, and thats it. So first off, don't get Clearwire whatever you do, its completely shit. Second, try to shop around for smaller or less known ISPs in your area. You might be able to find something that actually works.

Under normal conditions satellite connections isn't usually what you want for online gaming, due to the near avoidable lag you get as the signals are transferred back and forth the satellite.

Never tried it but I agree with POD - the lag will make gaming impossible

I was afraid of that
Looks like my playing may be limited to work
Thanks for replies.

It doesn't make it impossible.
I know of at least one player that plays on Satellite internet, and it is tolerable to good. (His best internet quality time starts around 1-2am CST).

Have a think about wireless broadband rather than satellite. Assuming you have mobile coverage where you are this is often the better option, at least for gaming.

NWN does not use a lot of resources, and is playable with a bit of lag like from satellite connections. It should still work fine, and not contribute greatly to your cap totals.

I've tried playing nwn with a friend on satellite and it was terrible... so I guess it depends on your connection/provider etc.

I hate Satellite Internet, its terrible, its expensive and slow but its all we get where i live at for the moment. But i do alright playing NWN some days it can be really laggy, other times, its fine. And when it storms out, forget about internet, and while your pissed off at it, and decide to go watch TV... you forgot your tv is also satellite and its fucked up too >:(

Isint the latency a huge problem with satellite internet no matter what provider?

Yeah but I'm generally very imperceptive

Am using this at the moment and it does work , certainly for Avlis no problem.
