great cleave

flurry of questions today...

is great cleave worth all the lusting after it i've done? does it work the way i'm reading it, that additional strikes just go on forever?

The next strike will only come if you kill a monster with the current hit. So you can kill 10 Fire beetles in 1 round, but can't hit 10 Sereg in 1 round.

Not worth spending a feat on.

well, killing 10 beetles in one round sounds great!

furthermore, i sincerely hope that my poor little monk never sees 10 sereg in one place...

Dunno, I tend to not meet 10 Beetles past Low Levels. Only met 10 Sereg when the DM is drunk... or SapperKen. He sucks.

Depends. I have it on my main and it can be very very useful. As Jazz says, it on;y works if you kill something with the hit but with a bit of planning it can be great.

My main does 1d8+2d4+13 unbuffed with her favourite weapon. Add in the usual buffs I use then that goes to 2d8+2d4+20 so 24 - 44 damage per hit. (Not bad for a level 25) ;)

So as long as the creatures have 24 hit points or less then great cleave will (if I hit) chain together and slaughter the lot. Most critters have more HP's than this though but a little planning and altering opponent when they're at 'Near Death' and Great cleave still works.

I have taken the feat with 2 of my character and I think it is worth it, when you are surround by lost of dumb little things I you really need to get through them to get to the mage in the back, it helps out... for fighter types I think it worth it... for mages and archers I am not so sure...

still none of my character have gone epic or anything, I am sure there are a number of feats that are better that you will need later on, but I take the feats I need at the moment, and cant plan ahead in character development, something I know I should work on... now that there are 40 levels and such, and XP come so easy, your character will blow through level 7 like its nothing, meaning you should plan ahead when taking feats.. some people even plan their whole character from level 1 to level 40 and all the feats they plan to take...

I have no problem hitting ten Sereg in one round. And I don't even have great cleavage. It's ok, I guess. But definitely not great.

However you do need great cleave as a pre req for over whelming critical, or even the dreaded dev crit, over whelming crit is great, dev crit is pretty damn annoying, gret cleave si a good feat in its own right too, if your a fighter type build and you can spare the feat, take it, dont listen to nasty mage people

Great Cleavage - now that's an entirely different feat...

1) There is bug in the combat (been there since the start) due to the way flurries work, etc. If you get > 3 attacks per round and you kill something in the first flurry, then you end up cleaving the thing you just killed! So you waste a cleave. Great cleave partially overcomes this, because you have unlimited numbers of cleaves per round. [Don't ask me the technical details, I think Nob posted it some years ago.]

2) If you do big hits (e.g. weapon master with high crit mult) then you really can kill things in one or 2 hits (e.g. 100hp damage a hit) so it is useful.

3) Great cleave is currently bugged, because each attack is at -5 AB of the last, so it soon runs out of steam. Bioware just fixed it (apparently) in the Beta that they are working on.

Might need to split this into it's own thread, but is overwhelming critical really that good? +1d6 seems a little lame to me.

(I'm not questioning dev crit, I've seen it in action both sides of the curtain).

Aren't you thinking of Whirlwind Attack?

i know nothing, but it seems that overwhelming crit draws it's strength from the weapon being used, like if it's some axe or something that delivers 4x on crits, then it's (+1d6)x4. is that right?

AFAIK, both Whirlwind Attack and Great Cleave where affected in the same way, and I believe both are fixed again in the forthcoming patch.

The manual says...
When using the chosen weapon, the character deals +1d6 points of damage on a successful critical hit. If the weapon's critical multiplier is x3, add +2d6 and if the multiplier is x4, add 3d6.
So, for example a WM with a x4 crit mult will get +3d6, which is nothing to sniff at. But otherwise it is really just another requirement towards DevCrit.

Bah, if you're a WM go for the x5 Crit multiplier and break out the farming tools!

Or get Devcrit and attack people with a toothpick!
