Translation Error?

I have no idea what happened...basically I was trying to transition and it wouldn't let me, so I went a rested and then tried again because I noticed I somehow had negative PSPs and thought that might be the reason. I ended up logging and then trying to come back when I got:

Connection Error: Could not translate address.

I was in Le'Or and heading through the transition down through the main gate into the wilderness. Three other PCs seemed to make it but for some reason I could go through.

I then tried to log on several other servers and was unable to do so, getting the same message.

"Cannot translate address" can mean two things: one is that avlis is down hardware wise and the servers are not there. You said others made it so that is not it, most likely this means your ISP had a hick-up and you were either not connected to the internet or the DNS servers were down for a bit (they are the ones doing the translation from the name to the numbers. Sometimes it helps to just reset your cable modem or router if it is just a disconnect (worked for me when this happens). Check the lights on the modem or try to connect to something else.

Doubt its your cable modem, its happeneing here too. I can connect through the multiplayer screen in NWN, but not through ASK, and can't transition servers, I suspect its the DNS server that that servers are connected to or an IP address change os something

Tried all of that last night..though apparently I connect to other servers, but just not Avlis. I think that's anyway. I'm going to try resetting the modem and if that doesn't work I'll reinstall to see if that makes a difference.

Had the same issue trying to use my usual log-in batch files.

Going directly through the Avlis links in PW Story worked fine though.

Thanks, looks like I finally got it. I could have sworn I tried going in without ASK last night...guess I was wrong

Silk recently did a forum migration that required some server swapping or something. Things may be screwy dns wise for a while.

In the meantime (before DNS's accross the world get updated), is it possible to log in with IP address? Or rather, what is the IP address, as I know it is possible, I've done it before in times of need :) Thanks. :D

You can also try to clear your DNS cache in Windows. It may be using the location information / translation stored on your computer. Here's how you clear DNS cache in windows:

Go to: Start -> Run -> type: cmd
In the command prompt, type: ipconfig /flushdns

You should see the message:

Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache

Then go fire up your NWN game and try it again. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help :D

Also, it would seem that I can't transition directly from server to server but instead have to click on transition, wait for it to tell me the server wouldn't accept the request and then go to main menu and login to the server I transitioned to. Sometimes I end up in the start area by doing this.

I too have an issue escaping from Ferrel to Wilderness, says character refused. Had Ptah try and log in, it would not let him log in.

When I tried logging back in to Ferrell, says I am supposed to be on Wilderness, and I am locked down, and booted after 2 minutes.

??Seems Ferrell is having issues.

Sinbad, have you tried any of the solutions offered above?

I tried CPU's solution, but no joy. Interesting little trick though, I'll have to remember that.

here's another one.

we have an avlis player on tairis who portaled over fine. avlis server DNS does not exsist. am having them try clearing the cache, but obviously they can't server hop--like people are having to do within avlis.

Same here: can't just walk from Mikona to M'Chek, tried to flush cash and so on :P
I've tried the manual way - just to relog a second after the server refused connection - and that seem to work most of the time. Most of...

Also receiving the "portal failed, server cannot accept your character" message after flushing the DNS.

For people still having problems with DNS translation errors. You should be able to log in using the numeric IP address. See here.

The problem seems to be while transitioning to a different server.

I found the suggestion of Login Out/IN after I was denied, did work to trans from Wilderness to Le'Or.
